We came together because we liked Hajimi, then began putting time, ideas, and effort into this community. A year later, that shared affection has produced some tangible results. In June, we completed our near-space mission, sending Hajimi roughly 40 kilometers up into the stratosphere. We kept the plush, flags, footage, photos, and coordinates. Anyone who wants to learn about this community in the future will be able to find those records and see what we did in our first year. It also got us thinking seriously: what else could we accomplish together over the next year, or the next three? Today, on our first anniversary, we would also like to introduce a long-term plan we have been preparing for some time: our community’s version of the “Ozaki Eight.” The eight projects are: near space, Mount Everest, the deep sea, Antarctica, orbit, the Moon, a 100-year time capsule, and a lasting physical monument. Near space is the first one we have completed. We hope to make progress on the remaining seven over the coming years. These plans will take research, coordination, and work from the community. We provide ongoing support to stray-cat rescuers and rescue centers, including retired women caring for hundreds of cats. Community members also continue to rescue stray animals on their own. While preparing everything, we were focused on getting it packed and delivered safely. Seeing the photos gave all that work a deeper meaning: the plushies we had prepared together were being held in someone’s arms and taken to places we have yet to visit.

Perhaps these Hajimis will find a home on someone’s desk, on a bookshelf, or in a suitcase heading off on another journey. Maybe one day, someone will ask about the little cat, and the answer will be:

“This is the Hajimi I met at TOKEN2049.”

That thought alone makes this journey feel wonderful.
