The Thing

Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are actively developing a new project based on The Thing (1982).

While it is frequently referred to as a "remake," the film is actually being planned as a brand-new adaptation of Frozen Hell, the unedited, novel-length version of John W. Campbell Jr.’s original 1938 novella, "Who Goes There?"

This means the new movie will feature expanding lore, chapters, and ideas that were entirely missing from both the 1951 film and John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece.

Horror powerhouse Blumhouse is steering the project. Producer Jason Blum confirmed they are working heavily on it, though concrete plot details remain locked down.

John Carpenter himself is actively tied to the development. He has repeatedly teased the project during fan conventions—including a recent update where he dropped a characteristically cryptic "We're working on it now".

There is ongoing mystery around its final format. While the studio initially pitched it as a Frozen Hell adaptation, Carpenter has heavily implied it could double as a true "The Thing 2". He previously noted interest in exploring what happened to MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs (Keith David) after the open-ended conclusion of the 1982 film.
