I polled 140 middle schoolers and asked for 1 word to describe school - this was what the results showed... time to reflect, what are we doing as educators to shift some of these word choices and hitting the needs of all our students?
Pushing students to try something new. Many painted a portrait of their scientist for the gallery walk. Here are a few from our showcase today #whitnallpride#WMS
Love the “agency projects” we’ve tested out this year. 2 week cycles of learning a new skill/resource & exploring science content that interests them = low risk trial and error & something productive to fall back on #WMS#WhitnallPride
Proud of my students and our sustainable cities project. Started this a few years back when our program was designed around Global Goals and it has been fun watching it evolve each year! @SDGoals#WhitnallPride#WMS
Dr. Sipiorski & Dr. Rosenfield (@UWStevensPoint couldn't find them on twitter) inspired me to become an educator. I didn't realize teachers illustrated fish books and brought owls to class until I met them 🐟🦉 #WMS#WMSGrateful
Something I appreciate about teaching middle school: the student creativity! I love to see what kids bring in for our agency project gallery walks 😊 #WMS#WMSGrateful
Lab station: If the irregular shapes were melting ice (above water), how could we estimate changes in sea level? Students are applying knowledge from math, measurement skills, and conceptual understanding of science to problem solve.
Studying student agency: select any science research article & communicate the findings in any way you see fit. The results? High engagement✅ quality projects✅ new skills✅ new content ✅ unique perspectives ✅
Modeling the law of superposition using dyed rice and a ♻️ bottle. Match a color to a time on the geologic time scale and you have a tool for class discussions. Add colored beans to extend the discussion to include fossils. Inexpensive ✅ sustainable ✅
Despite the rainy weather, students were able to spend several days out in the school forest this week collecting real data for our ELA/Ecology unit @perreault03
