Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, marking over 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. We remember the 6 million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. As survivors grow fewer and antisemitism rises, today is more vital than ever.
Today, the Prime Minister told the House of Commons that "harm from online gambling has surged" and appeared to back this up with the claim that "NHS referrals [for disordered gambling] are up 91% the past year." This raises a number of issues. A thread.
“I feel sorry for Reeves. I just felt she deserved something better”.
Excellent by Grainne Hurst in today’s @Telegraph on the need for growth, not headline grabbing and magic wands, ahead of a difficult budget. https://t.co/zu06gGohmz
Reality check: It won’t raise the money suggested, it is punters that will be hit, funding to sports will suffer (the big firms do sports & gaming - higher costs hit the business as a whole), investment/jobs are at risk + the unsafe, unregulated black market (zero tax) will boom.
Important intervention from @RichardBakerMP: "If we want thriving high streets, world-class sport, and a safe environment for those who choose to bet, then we must ensure that our tax regime supports a sustainable, regulated betting market." Read more 🔽

Important story by @ryansabey today about punters continuing to switch to the unsafe, unregulated black market in online betting. That’s bad for safer gambling, bad for sports like racing + bad for the economy as they pay no tax & employ no one. https://t.co/5SL1XcRoPk
My moment of triumph…Crowned yesterday as the @Coral Champion Tipster. Thanks to ex-England Glen Johnson for the bottle of fizz + a big thanks to @SiClare and all his fantastic team 🍾🏇🏻 #CheltenhamFestival
Fantastic to welcome @fionatwycross to the iconic @HippodromeLDN to tour the landmark venue, meet staff, and learn more about the UK's vibrant casino sector.

Rachel Reeves 💯. There are always reasons not to do something. But the country is either serious about going for growth or not. That means we can’t keep putting off big decisions. And it’s perfectly possible to choose jobs, investment & growth, whilst protecting the environment.
As we mark 80 years after liberation, when eyewitnesses are dwindling in number and as antisemitism continues to surge, it is more crucial than ever that this history is remembered.
Thank you Prime Minister for making this important visit.
📣Pleased to support Safer Gambling Week 2024 - a campaign now in its eighth year! Created to start a national conversation about safer betting and gaming.
As in previous years the campaign is supported by The Gambling Commission and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Delighted to support Safer Gambling Week 2024 - an important opportunity to spread the word about safer gambling and the tools available to take control and gamble more safely.
This is fantastic news. We are hugely grateful to the Chancellor for recognising our work. We are at a crucial juncture as Holocaust survivors become fewer and frailer, and the importance of ensuring their testimony is preserved and accessible for generations to come cannot be underestimated.
With the surge in antisemitism today and as the Holocaust moves from living history to history, this work is vital and urgent.

On behalf of 110,000 people whose jobs depend on the regulated industry, a big thanks to @fionatwycross for taking the time to meet with staff at the @GrosvenorCasino in Liverpool. We had a record number of MPs and ministers at our event at Labour conference.
