@simongerman600 I can speak about NJ where I lived & worked for most of my life. Trenton & Camden were hit hard by riots & white flight in 1968 & 1971. They lost a lot of industries in the following decades. A Trenton bridge still has the “Trenton Makes, World Takes” sign, now hollow message.

The biggest betrayer of the American system isn’t the politician, the bureaucrat, the lobbyist, or the media. It’s the American voter.

We love the concept. The educated citizen. The informed voter who “holds representatives’ feet to the fire.” The one who studies bills, tracks voting records, shows up at town halls, and imposes real consequences when those in office stop representing the people who sent them. That figure is held up as the moral core of the republic.

Most of us are not that person.

We are the ones who absorb the simplified story the media serves, then congratulate ourselves for being informed. We are the ones who retreat into echo chambers where every algorithm confirms what we already wanted to believe. We are the ones who treat elections like team sports and then act shocked when the people we sent to Washington behave like the sports entertainers we rewarded.

The Constitution never assumed angels in office. It assumed flawed humans who would be constrained by other flawed humans paying attention. That second group has largely checked out. We outsource our judgment to talking heads, influencers, and partisan media, then rage when the results don’t match the fantasy. We demand representatives who “fight,” then refuse to do the unglamorous work of knowing what they actually voted for, who funded them, or whether they delivered anything beyond rhetoric.

Citizenship is not a spectator sport with strong opinions. It is a responsibility that requires effort after the vote is cast. It requires reading primary sources instead of summaries. It requires noticing when “our side” fails the same tests we apply to the other side. It requires accepting that being manipulated is not something that only happens to other people.

The system is only as good as the people willing to police it. That's suppose to be us. When the electorate becomes passive, tribal, and easily herded, the betrayal is complete. The politicians didn’t break the republic by themselves. We handed them the tools and then looked away.

An educated voter who does not act like one is not educated. He is simply better at rationalizing his own abdication.
