Christians often assume there are only two options when it comes to 1 Enoch:

It’s Scripture.
It’s worthless.

I don’t believe either conclusion is warranted.

Consider what 1 Enoch says about the Son of Man. Long before Jesus was born, it describes a pre-existent heavenly figure who sits in authority, judges the nations, defeats evil, and reigns forever. Jesus then repeatedly identifies Himself with “the Son of Man”—the very title at the center of that expectation.

That should get our attention.

Does this mean we should add 1 Enoch to the Bible? No.

The manuscript evidence and historical case simply are not strong enough to justify canonizing it. The standard for Scripture is extraordinarily high, and we shouldn’t lower it.

But dismissing 1 Enoch as fantasy creates a different problem. How do you explain such a remarkably accurate portrait of the Messiah centuries before Christ?

The New Testament doesn’t ignore 1 Enoch. Jude quotes it. Peter echoes its themes. The early Jewish world clearly knew it. And its theology of the Son of Man is far closer to the New Testament than many critics are willing to admit.

Here’s the category I think many Christians have forgotten: a writing can contain genuine prophecy without being part of the biblical canon.

Not every true prophet wrote Scripture. Not every true prophecy became a book of the Bible. Scripture itself mentions prophetic writings and prophets whose words were never canonized.

So perhaps the better question isn’t, “Is 1 Enoch Scripture?” Rather, “Did God preserve authentic prophetic truth in this ancient work while reserving the canon for books that met a higher standard of apostolic and covenantal authority?”

Those are two different questions.

Rejecting 1 Enoch simply because it isn’t canonical is a logical mistake. Likewise, canonizing it simply because it contains prophetic truth is another.

The evidence seems to point to a more nuanced conclusion—one that many Christians have never been encouraged to consider.

The idea that humanity is waiting for “first contact” assumes we’ve never encountered another order of intelligent beings. From a biblical worldview, that’s simply not the case.

According to Scripture, humanity’s first contact with non-human intelligences happened at the very beginning. The serpent in Eden spoke with Eve. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, angels appeared to prophets, kings, shepherds, apostles, and ordinary people. Some brought messages from God. Others sought to deceive. The Bible presents a world in which humanity has interacted with spiritual beings from the start.

Outside the Bible, nearly every ancient civilization preserved traditions of encounters with beings from the heavens. While those accounts should be evaluated carefully and not accepted uncritically, it is remarkable how widespread they are across cultures separated by oceans and centuries.

If modern UAP or non-human intelligence claims prove genuine, Christians shouldn’t react as though history has suddenly changed. The biblical worldview has always included the existence of other intelligent beings created by God. The real question has never been whether they exist, but who they are, whom they serve, and whether their message agrees with the revelation God has already given.

The most important “contact” has already occurred—not between humanity and another civilization, but between God and mankind through Jesus Christ. Every other encounter should be judged in light of Him.

One of the most fascinating patterns in human history is that nearly every major ancient civilization preserved some memory of a distant “golden age”—a time when the gods walked among men, divine beings interacted with humanity, and civilization possessed knowledge and abilities later generations believed were lost.

The Greeks had the Age of Cronus. Mesopotamia remembered divine kings. Egyptian, Hindu, and countless other traditions preserve remarkably similar themes. Humanity seems to share a collective memory that something extraordinary existed before the great flood traditions found around the world.

But the Bible tells that story with a completely opposite moral.

Genesis 6 records that the Sons of God crossed the boundaries God had established by taking human wives. Rather than celebrating this union between heaven and earth, Scripture presents it as part of humanity’s rapid descent into corruption. Violence filled the earth, wickedness multiplied, and every inclination of man’s heart became continually evil. The result was not enlightenment, but judgment.

Ancient Jewish literature discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls—such as 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and the Book of Giants—develops this same understanding. These writings are not Scripture, but they show that ancient Jews interpreted Genesis 6 as describing heavenly beings violating God’s created order, corrupting mankind with forbidden knowledge, and producing an age of unprecedented wickedness.

That is a radically different message than the surrounding pagan world.

Where the nations looked back on the antediluvian age with nostalgia, the Bible looks back with grief.

Where pagan myths often portray the mingling of gods and men as the source of civilization’s greatness, Genesis portrays it as rebellion against God’s design.

Where the world remembers a golden age, Scripture remembers a fallen one.

That contrast is one of the strongest evidences that the Bible is not simply another Ancient Near Eastern myth. It refuses to glorify the very age that nearly every other culture celebrates. Instead, it exposes the true cost of crossing the boundaries established by the Creator.

The world’s myths remember power.

The Bible remembers sin.
