In 2020 I was one of 7 dems that won a district that Trump won, so I held a series of listening sessions with people who voted for Trump and voted for me to understand their actions. I reread the transcripts yesterday and much of it felt like it could have been said today. THREAD
This sounds frivolous in the grand scheme of things but we need to support archivists, protect public libraries, protect journalists, writers, artists, photographers, and filmmakers. We need to continue to keep culture alive and educate our youth.
Elections have consequences. The Supreme Court will be changed for a generation. I’ll never see a moderate court again in my lifetime. Alito and Thomas will step down and Trump will appoint 40 year old partisans to the bench. The damage he is about to inflict on our institutions the next 2 years will be irreparable.
here's someone who's taken as much grief from as many sides as anybody and just won again because she's ideologically consistent and her voters know exactly who she is
lock tf in. get your ass in mutual aid groups. lend your time to meal services. care for people in the way a vote simply never could. advocate for community gardens and libraries. stop betraying community. you don’t get a sticker or gold star. lock in.
Waking up to awful presidential news but some very good news for North Carolina to not lose sight of as well:
We broke the GOP supermajority in the N.C. General Assembly thanks in part to Dante Pittman’s hard fought win in the N.C. House. #ncpol#nced
As a literal hurricane barrels down on Western Cuba, a first take on what the other hurricane last night might mean for an already crisis-ridden Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations.
please keep the “we survived him once, we will do it again” tweets in the drafts or better yet delete them. millions of people did not in fact survive him, and millions more will not survive him again.
The impact of gerrymandering:
A state where 57 percent of voters want to eliminate government interference with abortion has a Legislature that imposed a near-total ban on abortion.
The reason that I’m so vocal about domestic failings in Cuba and don’t focus solely on the embargo is not just because it’s true that sometimes the root problem is homemade rather than imposed, but also bc the embargo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so domestic reform is urgent
Not sure who is making the argument that ‘four more years of this will fix things’; the argument being made by AOC, Ilhan, Bernie, and others on the left is that we have a (tiny) chance of ending this under one candidate and zero chance under the other. That’s the argument. 🤷🏽♂️
I’ve been very outspoken on Cuba’s domestic failings (which get underplayed as part of a false binary of embargo or internal dysfunction) but the embargo absolutely does add to it and we should be sending aid and easing sanctions for (if nothing else) humanitarian reasons
One of the things that’s exhausting about Cuba discourse is that so much time and energy has to be spent getting people to recognize just basic facts and problems that their particular side doesn’t want to talk about that there’s far less time spent figuring out real solutions
