Newhall's Rope & Cord Manufacturer was Est in 1840 & amalgamated with Dixon, Corbitt in 1887. Famous for their underwater Dover - Calais cable in 1850-51 & their Suez to Karachi cable in 1859. visit the old factory site as part of #GatesheadOpenStudios

Robert Spence-Watson lived in @BenshamGrove a #GatesheadOpenStudios venue. In 1871 he was an Honorary Secretary of @litandphil & in 1907 joined the Privy Council. He decorated @BenshamGrove with @WMGallery wallpaper & stained glass. #ThrowbackThursday

In the 30s @BenshamGrove became home to the Bensham Settlement Art Group & Robert Lyon started tutoring here he then began teaching the Ashington miners now known as the Pitman Painters & the groups very first exhibition took place at @BenshamGrove.

Had the best start to the day @balticgateshead #businessbreakfast having fun with the new exhibit ‘Play Rebellion’ by @pippahale and enjoying yummy food from @sixbaltic thanks to @freshelement @theNBS @SintonsLaw for helping us create the tallest tower!

Did you know the architect John Dobson who's work inc central station also designed St.Cuthberts Church now home to @CotfieldM & one of the venues you'll be able to visit as part of #gatesheadOpenStudios. Designed in 1846 & built-in 1848. #ThrowbackThursday
