With the combined support of the Upward Program and United Way, he’s rebuilding his life and proving that recovery is possible when people are met with the right resources. Thank you, Elevance Health Foundation, for making stories like Christopher’s possible.
Because of mental health support, life looks very different for Christopher today. He was able to get the tools he needed to process loss, face the pain he’d been carrying, and begin healing from substance misuse.
That support came through the Upward Program. While enrolled, Christopher secured a job and started saving for his future. And the care didn’t stop there. Thanks to move-in assistance from United Way, he was able to maintain stability and take the next step toward independence.
Searching for something to listen to? Our powerful podcast "Finding Home: Conversations on Homelessness" digs into the complex realities of homelessness. Listen here: https://t.co/dGoqk1VRFS

Leaders came together for A Northside Conversation: Connecting for a Healthy Gwinnett. It was a powerful panel, moderated by the Gwinnett Coalition, and explored challenges and solutions in behavioral health with voices from across Gwinnett.
Today, Rodney mentors others in his community and visits shelters to share his story, reminding those still struggling that change is possible. His life is proof that homelessness and addiction do not define a person.
Thank you Elevance Health Foundation for your support!
Rodney’s story is one of grit, redemption, and second chances. For weeks, he wandered Atlanta’s streets with only the clothes on his back and a battered backpack – remnants of a life lost to addiction.
After completing treatment, he secured a job at an auto shop. His hands—once trembling from withdrawal—were now steady, repairing engines and rebuilding lives.
Enrolling in Gateway Center’s residential program marked a turning point. There, he received addiction support, mental health counseling, job training, and peer mentorship. The path to recovery was not easy, but with each step, Rodney reclaimed pieces of himself.
