While visiting Lexington Kentucky in April I made a stop at Castlewood Park. One of the oldest parks in the city. The 32 acre park is home to the former Loudoun House and surrounded by old Oaks and Blue Ash. The largest of the Ash measuring 14.9’ CBH and a Bur Oak just over 18’
I spend a lot of time driving around looking for trees. Now, after the birth of my son, I find myself in the car even more. I take him along for the ride so he gets a nap in, to immerse him in nature on a hike, and to give my fiancé some quiet time. Enjoy our recent find :)
This Black Walnut was estimated to be 480 years old by a professor at Harvard back in the 1952. “First, measure the diameter. If the tree is more than 50 years old, figure an average of one-eighth of an inch per year growth. Multiply each inch by eight, and this gives the age.
This is former National Champion Chinkapin Oak. I believe it was just dethroned because of no one remeasuring and re submitting. The tree is part of a ancient oak savanna in the blue grass area that desperately needs some management and controlled burning.
