‼️From the 2008 there was a clear and sharp inflection point for electricity tariffs in South Africa. ‼️‼️‼️‼️
From 2008 to 2022, electricity tariffs increased by 653%, whilst inflation over this period was 129%. Thus, electricity tariffs increased four-fold (or quadrupled) in real money terms in 14 years.

Ipp’s cost Eskom R41 billion for 8% of power. IPPs take up 27% of Eskom expenditure on generation.
By contrast Coal produces 82% of the power for R77 billion or 50% of the expenditure.
The privatisation of Eskom power generation has benefited billionaires close to powerful men.
One billionaire owns an energy exchange that will sell IPP power to consumers, another billionaire is part of an IPP consortium funded out of London headquarters. He is scoring billions from this deal. There is gold at the end of his rainbow.
The other huge expense is burning diesel and gas. In 2023 R21 billion was spent burning on open cycle gas turbines. 14% of expenditure on generation. Owners of those fuel tenders are very happy.
