The Carney Liberals have introduced Bill C-39, the Build Canada Strong Act.

The bill is supposed to be about speeding up major projects, but the Liberals are facing criticism for throwing a whole bunch of other things in there unrelated to the main premise of the bill, like a stronger ability to crack down on labour strikes.

CBC spent years platforming the climate-and-labour orthodoxy that helped elect Mark Carney. CBC cheered the win. CBC cheered the floor-crossings and byelections that delivered the majority. CBC cheered the committee stacking that shut the opposition down. Now the same CBC is discovering, via Janyce McGregor, that the opposition is mathematically irrelevant and the sky is falling on their preferred causes

McGregor’s report is the tell. Environment and labour groups are calling C-39 the “bulldoze nature bill.” The Bloc, NDP and Greens together hold less than 10 percent of the House. Liberals have the majority on committee. Conservatives say they would go further, not less. The Canadian Labour Congress is already prepping a constitutional challenge over the right to strike. This is the same CBC whose editor-in-chief, Brodie Fenlon, has spent years insisting the network does not take sides. Fenlon: “That’s not our role.” Journalists must come to the story “with an empty notebook.” The job is a 360-degree view so Canadians can form their own opinions. Impartiality is the bedrock

Fenlon also wrote that the Journalistic Standards and Practices “can and will evolve” after staff complained impartiality rules were distorting coverage of anti-Black racism. CBC climate journalism took sides and remains “a top priority.” CBC “does not itself designate” groups as terrorists. And in promotional videos he tells Canadians they never have to wonder what is real or fake if it comes from CBC News

The pattern is not subtle. When the political project aligned with CBC newsroom’s priors, coverage treated process as progress. When the same majority now accelerates project reviews, creates “regions of national interest,” shortens consultations, and tightens federal labour rules so strikes can be ended for economic impact, the tone flips to alarm. The activists who were useful on the way up are suddenly the ones being “gaslit”

Canadians can see the sequence. They watched the cheering. They watched the majority assembled. They watched the committees restructured. They are now watching the same CBC act shocked that a majority government is using its majority. And that is not an empty notebook. That is a newsroom that got the outcome it wanted... and is only now discovering the bill of sale @brodiefenlon
