The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen Type 166 was the German army’s swimming car of World War II.

More than 15,500 of them rolled off the lines between 1942 and 1944, the highest production total of any amphibious car ever built. Powered by a simple 25-horsepower air-cooled engine, it reached 50 miles per hour on land and roughly 6 miles per hour in the water while carrying four fully equipped soldiers. Four-wheel drive, self-locking differentials, and a watertight boat-shaped body made it especially effective in the marshes, rivers, and mud of the Eastern Front, though it also saw service in North Africa, Italy, and Western Europe as a scout, staff car, and light transport.

Its real value lay in giving reconnaissance units the ability to cross water obstacles and soft ground that halted ordinary vehicles, extending mobility where the terrain itself was the enemy.
