Farouk Ramadan woke up yesterday to what Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have learned to expect: another attack by Israeli settlers.

When armed settlers confronted him and his brother near Nablus, Farouk defended himself after disarming one of the settlers who had pointed a rifle at them. He knew exactly what Palestinians know all too well. Defending yourself against settlers means Israel will make your family and your community pay the price.

By the end of the day, Farouk Ramadan, his brother Ibrahim, and their relatives Jawad and Imran Ramadan had been killed. Israeli officials immediately announced plans to demolish the Ramadan family home.

Afterward, settlers fanned out across villages surrounding Nablus. Homes and vehicles were set on fire. Residents came under live fire. Property was vandalized. Livestock were attacked. Families barricaded themselves inside their homes while armed settlers moved through their villages. Israeli officials responded by announcing a major military operation in the area, expanding settlement measures, and calling for more demolitions.

For those of us in New York City, none of this is disconnected from us.

The organizations that finance Israeli settlements are incorporated here. They raise money here. They host fundraising dinners here. They receive tax deductible donations here. We are not only sending billions of dollars in military aid to Israel. We also allow organizations that bankroll the settlement movement to operate openly in our own city.

Earlier this year, Kars4Kids went viral after a California judge ruled that its advertising misled donors by failing to disclose that the charity primarily funds Orthodox Jewish educational and religious programs. People were shocked because they believed they had been donating to a general children’s charity, not to a much more specific mission.

So why is there nowhere near that level of outrage over tax exempt organizations in New York City openly raising money for settlements whose settlers carry out attacks like the ones we witnessed today?

Instead, we are encouraged to reduce everything to Benjamin Netanyahu, as though replacing one prime minister would dismantle the machinery responsible for the mass killing, ethnic cleansing, colonization, and genocide of the Palestinian people.

The problem has never been one politician. It is the military occupation. It is the settlement enterprise. It is the politicians who fund it. It is the lobby that protects it. It is the organizations that finance it. It is the governments that arm it. It is the entire Zionist apparatus that has made these crimes possible.

Meanwhile, we are told to celebrate politicians for offering carefully worded criticism of Netanyahu while continuing to fund and protect the very system that produced him. We are thanking politicians for crumbs while they continue financing the machinery that is killing our people.

Farouk Ramadan’s name should force us to ask why the organizations financing the settlements that terrorize Palestinians are allowed to operate openly from New York City with tax benefits and little to no pushback while Palestinians defending their communities are condemned and killed.

To people out there with influence, power, and money:

It's time to create new international institutions to replace the corrupt, racist ones we have now—from FIFA to the CPJ (committee for the protection of journalists).

After the blatant hypocrisy, racism, and even sadism we've seen in the past three years from these supposedly "neutral" institutions, it's clear to anyone paying attention that western cultural hegemony should have no place in the future.

For example, we can have a "Global Cup" to replace the World Cup with someone fair, inclusive, and loyal to the spirit and rules of football.

The idea of "fixing the system" is not worth our time or effort. It's rotten to the core, because they are run, and perhaps even established by, people who are rotten to their cores.

The global majority can withdraw our participation and let these sham institutions die a slow death from lack of attention. Remember: their legitimacy ultimately comes from us, from our attention and belief in them. We can simply withdraw.

NEW: The Board of Directors at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will formally change its definition of who qualifies as a journalist, to broadly exclude slain Palestinian and Lebanese journalists who worked for government-funded media outlets. Israeli, American, and Ukrainian journalists who work for state-funded outlets or are embedded with the military will remain recognized as journalists, of course.

The move was catalyzed to appease the right-wing Zionist rag The Free Beacon, which has repeatedly accused Palestinian and Lebanese journalists of being undercover militants or used their political opinions or affiliations as justification for their killing by the IOF.

This is a racist scandal of massive proportions for everyone involved, and it makes a mockery of the purported mission of the organization. It is absolutely abhorrent that the organization’s resources are wasted on this cowardly witch-hunt, at a moment in history that is the deadliest for journalists, especially in Palestine and Lebanon.

The 1956 Kafr Qasem massacre was carried out by the Israeli Border Police under cover of the tripartite attack on Egypt by England, France, and Israel. Two other massacres took place during the ensuing days in the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis, where 111 and 275 Palestinian civilians were slaughtered by Israeli troops on their way to Egypt, respectively. In Kafr Qasem, an artifice was created to provide a fig-leaf excuse for the killing of innocent people ― a curfew announced less than a half an hour before it was implemented. Workers returning home, tired and hungry, unaware of the curfew, were cold-bloodedly shot dead by members of the Israeli Border Police. Based on interviews with survivors, Samia Halaby created a set of documentary drawings on the subject. The emotions of anger and fear leap from every page of this book, enabling the reader to bear witness to the terrible suffering endured by the inhabitants of this small Palestinian village.
