The Labour government has announced that it will designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – a central branch of the Iranian armed forces – as a terrorist organisation, making it a criminal offence to support it “in any way”.
It should be pointed out that the IRGC is not some shadowy militia; it is part of the regular military of a sovereign state – a state that is being subjected to a flagrantly criminal war of aggression by the US and Israel; its schools, hospitals and oil depots bombed; its scientists, political leaders and head of state assassinated.
Britain now proposes to brand the armed forces of the victim of that aggression as “terrorists”, while the governments that actually launched the attack, and the state currently perpetrating a genocide in Gaza, enjoy Britain’s active support.
What is being criminalised is not violence or “terrorism” but a political position: solidarity with a country under attack. It is a serious crackdown on the anti-war and anti-imperialist movements, and a message to the working class movement in general about where the lines of acceptability lie.
Interestingly, the Tories, for all their faults, repeatedly declined to proscribe the IRGC, precisely because designating a foreign state’s military as a terrorist entity is a reckless and legally dubious act. It has taken a Labour government to do it.
This comes hot on the heels of Labour’s proscription of Palestine Action – a direct-action protest group that has never taken a life, whose “crimes” consist of spray paint and damage to arms factories complicit in genocide.
So this “progressive” Labour government, elected on a promise of change, is proving more repressive and authoritarian than the Tory administration it replaced. It’s expanding the definition of terrorism to encompass protest and dissent at home, and legitimate resistance to imperial aggression abroad.
As the empire’s power wanes and its crimes multiply, it criminalises those who have the temerity to oppose them. The task for the left is not to flinch, but to say plainly what is happening – and to defend, without apology, the right to oppose war and genocide.

Lost faith in the BBC? Doesn’t matter. The govt wants to make you watch it - and to suppress independent media.

Not a single day since a supposed ceasefire that Palestinians in tents are not being slaughtered by Israel. Gaza City is under a brutal series of bombings right now. The ambient genocide continues.
While countries like France, Britain, Canada, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand consistently attempt to distinguish between settler organizations and the Israeli government, Israel’s own actions consistently prove that no such division exists.
@anainsin Try: Moral cover and material support for genocide, erosion of UK civil liberties, reversing his positions on everything he claimed to hold dear as he was climbing the ladder, etc., etc.

How the western ruling class and the Zionist lobby spent $14 billion to take back control of our minds:
NHS FRAUD CAUGHT ON CAMERA, NOBODY CARED
Sharmila Chowdhury @sharmilaxx gave the @NHS 30 years of clean service. Not one blemish. Then she did something apparently unforgivable. She noticed two consultant radiologists at Ealing Hospital, now part of London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust @LNWH_NHS, were billing the NHS for shifts they were actually spending at a private hospital down the road.
Getting paid twice for the same hours. That is fraud everywhere except, it turns out, inside the NHS complaints system.
She reported it. To her line manager. To the Medical Director. To the HR Director. To Counter Fraud. To the Chief Executive. To Number 10. To the Treasury. She built a paper trail so thorough that ITV @itvnews later sent an undercover team into the hospital and filmed the same consultants years on, still taking cash from patients for private ultrasounds inside NHS premises.
The Trust's response to all that diligence was to sack her, based on counter allegations later shown to be fabricated.
The man behind those allegations reportedly signed off an email too crude to print here ..........
....... He picked up a Top Mentor award from the Trust that same year. You could not write comedy this good on purpose.
Sharmila took it to tribunal and won. She won her appeal too. The judge told the Trust to reinstate her. The Trust said no. She was then quietly blacklisted across the NHS. One job offer was withdrawn the moment they worked out who she was. Legal costs hit £130,000.
Somewhere in the middle of it she developed breast and lung cancer, which her doctors link to years of sustained stress.
The two consultants kept their jobs. George Osborne could not get involved. Andrew Lansley could not get involved. David Cameron could not get involved. Every one of them filed it under employment matter, which is Whitehall for we would rather not know.
A proven fraud case, covered by ITV @itvnews, the Guardian, Daily Mail @DailyMail, Channel 4 News @Channel4News, the Independent @Independent, BBC News @BBCNews, the Times @thetimes and the Daily Mirror @DailyMirror. The official position of Her Majesty's Government was still not our problem.
This is the reward system in action. Report fraud, lose your career, lose your health, and watch the people you reported get promoted.
This is properly insane: quite literally the worst example of censorship I've ever heard of anywhere.
I checked the actual ruling (which you can see here: https://t.co/dBKFWZ2ZWm) and, to be clear, it isn't just censorship in the conventional sense - blocking access to a website or removing content from platforms - this is the criminalization of information relayed by private citizens, with prison sentences attached.
And the most insane aspect if that it does NOT matter if the information relayed is accurate or not. It just matters that it originates from RT or other media outlets banned in the EU.
In other words, truth isn't a defense anymore in the EU, it literally doesn't matter. It's purely based on the identity of the speaker.
The ruling is actually explicit about this: the regulation, quoted by the Court says that the prohibition applies to "any content," and they draw no distinction based on what the content actually says. If it originates from banned outlets, it's banned.
It is, quite simply, a complete unraveling of the entire post-Enlightenment legal and philosophical project where entire generations of Europeans fought to move from "who says it" to "is it true" as the operative question.
Think about the absurdity of it: if RT publishes a video saying the sky is blue and you share it on a publicly accessible website in the EU, you'd fall within the scope of this ruling, making you liable to criminal prosecution.
Completely and utterly absurd. But that's the EU today for you 🤷
