Yesterday Lavrov launched into a brutal tirade of unsubstantiated accusations against Ukraine and its western allies.

One of his statements, complete out of context, made it appear that the West embraces Nazism.

“Germany, Italy and Japan voted against the document banning glorification of Nazism twice on a row at the UN General assembly.”

In fact these countries categorically condemn the glorification of Nazism and all modern forms of violent extremism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, xenophobia, discrimination, and related intolerance.

Not only Germany, Italy and Japan voted against but 49 countries did.

But that said, these countries oppose the Russia’s manipulation of the UN system to spread disinformation. This resolution, introduced every year since a decade, is a glaring attempt by Russia to further its geopolitical aims. It invokes the Holocaust and the Second World War to malign countries that rightfully reject the celebration of their brutal domination by the Soviet Union.

This is more egregious now, when Russia uses false accusations of Nazism to try to justify its war of aggression against Ukraine.

Russia’s resolution is not a serious effort to combat Nazism, antisemitism, racism, or xenophobia, all of which are abhorrent and unacceptable.

Instead, Russia’s attempts to instrumentalize history to justify its aggression is an affront to Holocaust victims and to all who fought against Nazism. This resolution is a shameful political ploy.

According to the press release published on the UN website, in 2022, Ukraine called this text hypocritical believing that, contrary to its title, it was a pretext used by Russia to justify its brutal war against its country and the despicable crimes committed against humanity.

That’s why these countries voted against it. If there is one country in the grip of fascism, it’s Russia.
