Trump ostentatiously releases photos of himself with Kim Jong-un and gushes about his "very good relationship" with him—all while scaling back joint US-South Korean military exercises.

This is not statesmanlike diplomacy. This is pandering to a dictator.

Kim Jong-un heads one of the world’s most brutal regimes: a state with no free elections, no free press, and no independent judiciary, characterized by the systematic oppression of its own people. At the same time, North Korea is expanding its nuclear arsenal and supporting Putin’s war against Ukraine with weapons and troops.

And Trump? Instead of firmly keeping this dictator in check, he displays photos of them together like trophies and makes his personal relationship with Kim the centerpiece of American foreign policy.

The same pattern applies to Putin: where a US president ought to call out an aggressor’s crimes and strengthen America’s democratic allies, Trump demonstratively seeks closeness with men who have made war, repression, and violence the guiding principles of their rule.

The United States has become a personal stage for Trump’s vanity. The office of the US president is now being used to legitimize the world’s most brutal dictators.

Inside North Korea, Kim Il-sung is presented as the benevolent “Great Leader” who liberated a nation and created a self-reliant socialist paradise.

The reality? He built one of history’s most totalitarian regimes—a hereditary communist dictatorship enforced through a system of political prisons and labor camps, mass starvation due to failed policies, and a personality cult mandating daily ideological rituals.

Three generations later, North Koreans are still imprisoned in a communist nightmare.

The United States asked Ukraine not to strike Moscow while senior American officials are visiting the russian capital, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

Think about that.

When American officials travel to Moscow, Washington apparently has no problem asking Ukraine: Do not attack Moscow while we are there.

But just days earlier, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner canceled their planned visit to Kyiv around Ukraine’s Independence Day because of “heavy russian air strikes on the city.”

So why didn’t Washington simply ask russia: Do not attack Kyiv while American officials are there?

Apparently, the United States can ask Ukraine to stop bombing russia to protect American officials in Moscow. But it cannotask russia to stop bombing Ukraine to protect American officials in Kyiv.

Instead, Witkoff and Kushner canceled their trip.

This tells you something important about American diplomacy under Trump.

Washington repeatedly demands restraint from Ukraine while accommodating russia. It expects Kyiv to adjust its military actions around American diplomacy, while seemingly accepting that Moscow will continue bombing Ukrainian cities whenever it wants.

You cannot be an honest broker when the rules apply only to one side.

That is blatant hypocrisy.
