Asked Chase Elliott if he has considered recusing himself from the Most Popular Driver Award voting to allow Kyle Busch that honor, as his father Bill did when Dale Earnhardt died in 2001.
"I would be in extreme favor of Kyle winning the vote. I think that he's a guy that certainly poured a lot of his life into this sport. Although he might've been getting boos a lot of weeks, he also had a lot of fans, and a lot of really passionate fans.
"I really haven't processed all of that, I guess, to get to that point. But I would certainly be in favor of him winning and whatever it took. Yeah, I think it would be really deserving for him to have that honor."
In 2001, Bill Elliott removed his name from voting for most popular driver to clear the way for Dale Earnhardt to win it. In gratitude, the NMPA said they would someday name the award after Elliott
25 years later, Chase Elliott appears willing to make a similar gesture for Busch
.@chaseelliott has been overwhelmed with emotions about the passing of @KyleBusch.
Specifically, Elliott hurts for Brexton Busch, who he can relate to as a son growing up and learning from his father.
He made it clear that he wants to help Brexton in anyway possible going forward and calls for the industry to support this family for years and years, as the pain will not go away.
Full clip to come.
