In Nigeria, solar panels are not a luxury, they are a lifeline. With the current heat wave, unreliable electricity, and the rising cost of fuel, millions of households and small businesses depend on solar for survival and productivity.

It is worrying to hear discussions about banning solar panel imports when local manufacturing capacity is still extremely low. A ban without local capacity will hurt the very people and businesses struggling to cope with energy poverty.

The focus should be on growing local manufacturing, creating incentives for investors, supporting technology transfer, and building skills then gradually reducing imports in phases. Not an outright ban.

Energy access is not a luxury. Clean energy is a necessity.

Solar is not a luxury in #Nigeria, it’s a lifeline for homes, businesses, schools, and health centres. A blanket ban on solar panel imports at this stage risks deepening energy poverty, not solving it.
Let’s get the sequence right:
1. Invest in local manufacturing
2.Strengthen supply chains & skills
3. Scale demand with supportive policies
3. Then transition gradually not abruptly
Nigeria needs a phased strategy, not a shock to a sector already filling the electricity gap.
The goal should be clear: energy access + local industry growth.
