“Jesus is a teacher who doesn’t just inform our intellect but forms our very loves. He isn’t content to simply deposit new ideas into your mind; he is after nothing less than your wants, your loves, your longings.” - James KA Smith
“We have created youth ministry that confuses extroversion with faithfulness. We have effectively communicated to young people that sincerely following Jesus is synonymous with being 'fired up' for Jesus, with being excited for Jesus, as if discipleship were synonymous with fostering an exuberant, perky, cheerful, hurray-for-Jesus disposition like what we might find in the glee club or at a pep rally.” - James KA Smith
In Leviticus, poverty is spoken of as weakness or shortness of the "hand."
The hand grasps, and so symbolizes power, labor, the capacity is take and hold property. Wealth and power are in the hand. A weak hand cannot extend to aid or redeem a brother.
When you have a short hand, you're reduced to receiving, and can't participate in the give and return-gift that is social life.
This is the pathos of poverty: Not merely want, but the incapacity of the poor to participate fully in the life of Israel.
And the aim of all relief is to restore the hands of the poor so they can be fully active members of the body.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6
What are you trusting him to do all day long?
This: “I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you.” Isaiah 41:10
Where the human mind is not fed with any doctrine at all, it is simply at the mercy of the first mean sophistry or two-penny cynical generalization that it may hear from a fast schoolfellow or vulgar employer.
I think I owed my success (as the millionaires say) to having listened respectfully and rather bashfully to the very best advice, given by all the best journalists who had achieved the best sort of success in journalism; and then going away and doing the exact opposite.
How happy are they who can resign all to him, see his hand in every dispensation, and believe that he chooses better for them than they possibly could for themselves!
If we feel more righteous as we read the Bible, we are misreading it; we are missing its central message. We are reading and using the Bible rightly only when it humbles us, critiques us, and encourages us with God’s love and grace despite our flaws.
BREAKING: Trump Media is charging up to $100,000 a month for banks and trading firms to get faster millisecond access to Trump's Truth Social posts through the "Truth API" low-latency feeds before anyone else does, per FT.
This is directly aimed at creating a new revenue stream for Trump.
I believe nothing more habitually reconciles a child of God to the thought of death, than the wearisomeness of this warfare. Death is unwelcome to nature;—but then, and not till then, the conflict will cease.
