I got asked a lot this weekend about my skincare routine as an almost 47 year old. I won’t gate keep.

The top RLT influencers now admit that LED Panels were not clinical grade, and obviously they had to make up a lot of claims with zero evidence to fill in the gaps in their initial books and blogs. So, what did these humble learners get wrong? They are too shy to say.
The Red Light Therapy trend started almost 10 years ago with popular brands and their influencers. The Dunning Krueger Effect caused these new learners to make confident false claims in their books and blogs. It has been GembaRed's work that thanklessly cleaned it up.
YOUR RED LIGHT PANEL MAY BE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD.
More intensity is not always better.
Lower intensity over longer exposure is the ONLY evidence based conclusion, hence why that is what we receive naturally from the sun.
Many red light therapy devices produce 5-10x the intensity of natural sunlight.
That's not a feature. It's a problem.
Dr. Alexander Wunsch — the first researcher to publish a peer-reviewed full-body photobiomodulation study (2012):
“A lot of companies or manufacturers, they just go for the highest intensity possible. And here, from my point of view, this can be a problem.”
The industry problem: a lot of manufacturers chase maximum intensity.
Sometimes 10x the spectral irradiance found in natural sunlight at specific wavelengths.
This is the wrong optimization target.
Here's why:
In sunlight, all wavelengths are entangled. Intensity at one wavelength is always proportional to the others.
The system evolved within this relationship.
When you isolate one wavelength and amplify it 10-20x — you decouple it from the system it evolved within.
Wunsch: "When we put out or take out certain wavelengths and amplify them by a factor of 10, we cannot be sure that our protective mechanisms are still capable of handling these powers."
No thermal warning signal fires.
Your biology has no alarm for this type of overdose.
The intensity window problem:
Biological systems have intensity windows — ranges within which light produces a beneficial response.
Exceed those windows and more intensity does not mean more benefit.
Past a certain threshold, stronger intensity no longer means better effect.
Wunsch: "If you shoot over these windows it does not mean that the stronger and stronger and stronger intensity means that you have a better and better and better effect."
The skin regeneration trap:
High-intensity red light can produce rapid cosmetic results — fewer fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin texture.
This works short-term.
The mechanism: acute inflammation triggers accelerated cell turnover.
Wunsch: "For example, skin regeneration, rejuvenation, if you want to have a short effect, then you can use very high intensities. You will create a subtle inflammation, inflammatory response, and you can measure less fine lines and wrinkles, but it will backfire.
There will be a backlash after a certain while. You cannot pull or activate the inflammatory reaction as often as you want because replacement of cells goes along with shortening of telomeres."
The problem: each cycle of inflammation-mediated cell replacement shortens telomeres.
The cosmetic benefit is real. The backlash is deferred — not avoided.
What photobiomodulation actually means:
Photo — light.
Bio — life.
Modulation — bringing back to balance.
Not maximization. Modulation.
Wunsch: "You should not expect gigantic effects from photobiomodulation because photobiomodulation is normalization. You will bring back balance and coordination into the system."
"The ideal treatment is kind of subliminal."
Not the highest wattage panel you can find.
The industry sells maximization.
The biology requires modulation.
