@Futurenoir100@AmeliaRocket1 I actually respect the fact he’s managed to get a handle on himself and do some good. Most ‘narcissists’ never even consider therapy. Russell’s managed to turn pure self-interest into self-awareness and you don’t amass an audience of 6.6m without doing something right.
@Futurenoir100@AmeliaRocket1 Narcissists are people too. Also, I’m not sure labels are helpful - narcissism is on a continuum. Most of us have traits. Clinical narcissism often stems from developmental trauma and doesn’t automatically make someone bad or dangerous. People can heal. But then you knew that.
@Futurenoir100@AmeliaRocket1 What does that label even mean to you? As in, you think he would meet the criteria for NPD? Are you a clinical psychologist?
@beverleyturner@rustyrockets I’m a lefty, have never strayed onto your news channel before, but I feel very let down by the Guardian’s histrionic and biased coverage of the Brand witch hunt. Thanks for sharing a rare balanced and nuanced view on this and sorry about your co-host. What a horrid man!
@David_Challen Practically speaking, where do you draw the line? I met my first boyfriend aged 15 when he was 24. He was the love of my life (or so I thought) and we stayed together for 7 mostly happy years. You could argue I was naive but actually so was he.
@MarinaHyde Good piece. The only sober piece I’ve read from the Guardian on this tbh. I hope those women are okay. I still have beef with the media circus tho. Has anyone actually bothered watching anything Brand’s written or said in the last 8 yrs before jumping on the bandwagon?
@GeorgeMonbiot Does that mean he never had anything useful to say or that his fans are blinkered? I’m not so sure. I feel like we need less blame and shame and more compassion and curiosity or nothing gets better. Hate fuels hate. (But he should still be held responsible and face consequences)
@GeorgeMonbiot I feel like mainstream media is good at ‘splitting’ - people are either all this or that, when life and people just aren’t like that. Should Brand and the system he flourished in be held to account. Most definitely…
@GeorgeMonbiot It’s contempt for all these supposedly misinformed idiots that means it’s easy for articulate people like Brand to grow such a fan base. They don’t get heard or respected anywhere else.
@GeorgeMonbiot Not tuned into anything more recently but I’ve always thought he held a broad audience because he wasn’t dismissive of other people’s beliefs or views. Ppl in this feed writing off a large section of society as ‘crackpot conspiracy theorists’ is the reason he’s amassed so many.
@GeorgeMonbiot I liked listening to his Under the Skin episodes as I always found his chats with guests interesting and challenging, even if I didn’t agree with everything they had to say.
Anyone else think that in #MishaAndTheWolves Misha’s fabrications were a #trauma response? She dissociated so hard she just never came back. Losing both your parents to the #holocaust and then being branded a traitor’s daughter by everyone, including family must have been awful.
