“Honestly, it’s crazy when you look at what Manchester City could potentially lose. We are not just talking about a fine or a few points. These charges cover nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018, and City won the Premier League three times during that period.

If the punishment includes retrospective points deductions and those points change the final tables, then you could have a situation where a team that originally finished second moves above City. Look at 2011/12 City and Manchester United both finished on 89 points, so even one point could theoretically change the champion if the table were recalculated. In 2013/14, Liverpool finished two points behind City, while 2017/18 was different because City finished 19 points ahead of United.

That is why this is bigger than people think. But we still have to separate the guilty verdict from the punishment. The sanctions have not been decided, City can appeal, and nobody knows yet whether historical titles will actually be affected.

So yes, it’s crazy what could be at stake but we will have to wait and see what punishment comes next.”
