A few years ago, I had a long layover in an airport and met an American soldier. He was on his way home from Abu Dhabi, where he was visiting his wife who was serving on a jet carrier in Abu Dhabi, while he had been deployed in Afghanisan.
We met around 10 p.m., and we talked until our flights departed the next morning.
During our conversation, I found out he had been friends with Chris Kyle, the American sniper. He showed me photos of his unit, and pictures of himself with Chris.
At the time, I had recently seen the movie American Sniper, so I asked him what Chris was like. He shared some stories, some funny, some tragic. What stuck with me, however, was the mindset.
American soldiers like him believe they’re fighting evil.
Not as a metaphor, but as a real, existential threat to their country’s future. As Chris Kyle’s father said in the film: there are three kinds of people in this world, sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs.
American soldiers see themselves as the sheepdogs, standing between innocent lives and the wolves who seek to destroy them. They fight enemies who carry weapons. Who shoot back. Who openly declare war.
When Israeli soldiers fight Hamas, they carry the same conviction. They are not aggressors. They are not war criminals. They are defenders, fighting a group that deliberately fires rockets at Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian children.
American and Israeli soldiers don’t bomb weddings because of someone’s religion. They don’t raid churches or mosques because of ideology. When they take difficult actions, it is under legal, ethical, and strategic constraint.
Even Hiroshima and Nagasaki, tragic, world-altering, were not driven by religious hatred, but by the calculus of ending a global war. The Allied invasion of Germany was existential: a choice between defeating evil or being consumed by it.
Islamic terrorists don’t function this way.
Their definition of “evil” isn’t strategic or even political. It is theological. Evil, to them, is anyone who does not believe in Allah and His Messenger.
That’s the core of Islamic jihad. They don’t see civilians. They see infidels. Enemies of God, and so, to them, a market, a school, a church, a bus, those are all legitimate targets.
That’s why Hamas can detonate bombs at a Seder dinner. That’s why Hezbollah fires rockets indiscriminately into towns. That’s why today, in northern India, terrorists carried out yet another cowardly attack.
So when some naïve “expert” or clueless activist equates American or Israeli military operations with Islamic terrorist attacks, they are not just wrong, they are morally blind.
They confuse the rules of engagement with the rules of annihilation. They confuse self-defense with genocide.
They confuse the sheepdog with the wolf.
No us entenc. Compreu maniquís si no voleu q sorgeixin emocions.
