Fairy forts, 100 year old hedges & a 200 year old tree are to be sacrificed to make way for a plantation of foreigners while just miles away an Irishman faces prison for erecting a log cabin on his own land.

Having been made homeless twice because of flooding, I cannot imagine what this man is going through.

There are a few discrepancies on this story, This is not a log cabin, it is a mobile home which he clad in wood to make it fit in.

It seems that our rulers, our county councils and local authorities would be happier if this man was on the street or dead, rather that him taking his own initiative to provide shelter for himself as man has done since the age of dawn.

It is very telling of our rulers when non-Irish who have just arrived off a plane having lost their papers in the air, are entitled to dental, medial card, A weekly payment and housing, In fact Rodrick O Gorman sent out flyers all over the world promising persons their own house within weeks of getting here, Yet we have bulging housing lists filled with irish persons some of whom have been on the list for 10 years plus who now are being leap frogged with non-nationals being bumped to the top of the list.

We have planning laws signed in by Minister O’Brien European Union (Planning and Development) (Displaced Persons from Ukraine Temporary Protection) Regulations 2022 (S.I. 306 of 2022). Which has been extended by five years.

This planning allows anyone to convert a building into refugee accommodation by passing all planning regulations, including objections by neighbours.

Yet Tipperary County Council are planning to put this man to jail and while he is in there destroy his only home, and then what when he is released from prison he applies for emergency accommodation at a cost to the state, he goes on a housing waiting list at 65 years of age at time of his life that he should have the comfort of a place to call his own which he built with his own hands and paid for.

It is now looking like the lunatics have taken over the asylum, It is time to Vote NoNo to send a message to the government that the people of Ireland have have enough of the current regime we need an election where TDS who work for the ordinary citizens of Ireland such as the people of Ireland come first and persons like this man are left to enjoy their twilight years.

A lot of people in his position would have gone crying to social welfare to get him a house, he took care of himself and that has to be respected.

The time is now to flush the present regime out of power and let's elect persons who care for Ireland and its citizen rather than the promise of a Job in Europe or a brown envelope or worse still TD's who are being blackmailed because of past indiscretions.

If this man is sent to jail, there need to be a vigil around his home until he returns.

The Story

A 65-YEAR-OLD man says he is prepared to go to prison rather than take down a log cabin that he has built on his own land, but the Council claims is against the law.

Sean Meehan, who has been given until March 14 to remove the modular home, admitted: "I have nowhere else to go."

The New Inn native bought a piece of land five years ago and moved into a mobile home on the plot after he sold his house following a divorce.

But he may now spend his 66th birthday in prison after becoming caught up in a legal battle with Tipperary County Council.

The case has ended up in court with Sean telling the Irish Sun that he is prepared to take a stand.

He said: “I’m going to take a stand on this. If they are going to send me to jail at 65 years of age then I am prepared to do that.

“I didn’t do anything to anybody. Why should I be persecuted in my own country when I was born and reared in this area and now I’m being made homeless.

“I’m back in court on the 4th of April and I haven’t taken it down and I’m not going to take it down. I don’t have any other place to go.

“This is something else. I never did anything to anybody. I tried to make a home for myself at my age and I’m being persecuted for it.”

Sean, who couldn't afford to buy a new house or move into one at the time, upgraded the mobile home four years ago after the first winter gave him a "shock to the system".

"I couldn’t afford to move somewhere else but I knew I had to do something for my health.

"I had seen a mobile that had been logged out and insulated so I roped in my friends who are all trained in different trades such as carpentry and plumbing to help me upgrade the mobile home.

"We made sure we did it right."

But Sean soon faced another health scare and was told he had a "large growth" on his prostate.

He was put on medication that "made him sick as a dog" but reduced the growth enough to send him to surgery, which he made a full recovery from.

He said: "I knew could put my focus back on everything I was forced to put on hold. I went for planning and looked for five years for the cabin so it would give me time to decide what I was going to do.

"But bang, I got a ‘no’ back from Tipperary County Council. So I went again for full planning on it and again I got a no."

And they told him the property, which sits on a previously derelict site that Sean says was once used as a place for people to dump rubbish, looked bad aesthetically.

Sean said: "In fairness I do agree you can't just put anything unsightly up but we made it well. We used all skilled tradespeople and we made it so it didn’t look out of place on the land."

The pensioner did not "want to be a burden" and ask for help, claiming he has "done his own thing" his whole life and refused his daughter's offer to move in with her and her three young children.

And he told how he could never afford to move or rent somewhere else.

He explained: "There was a derelict cottage on the market down the road from me for €185,000.

"I could never afford that or afford paying €1000 in rent.

"So instead I made the best out of my situation and looked after myself without asking for help as I have always done."

COURT BATTLE

Sean has been brought to Cashel District Court four times and is due back in court on April 4th - where he will be transferred to Limerick prison if he doesn't have the log cabin removed in the next two weeks.

But the Tipperary native said he is prepared to take a stand to the catch 22 situation that he has become embroiled in.

He said: "If I comply and take down the cabin, where do I live? But if I refuse and go to jail they will still take it down and I’ll come back home to an empty site so where do I live then?"

And he explained that the mobile home is not attached to the cabin, so he could put the hitch onto it and take the movable structure off the land.

The local community have rallied around Sean in his time of need.

A petition, started by neighbour Keith O'Brien, has already amassed 3,000 supporters who "believe that shelter is a basic human right and this elderly man should be allowed to live out his day's in his home which he has provided himself at no cost to the state."

A Facebook page called ‘Save Sean’s Cabin’ has also been set up, alongside a GoFundMe page called ‘Pensioner facing prison for building a log cabin’.

The fundraiser is aimed to help Sean with legal fees, which have already racked up as high as €7,000, as he tries to "see out his remaining years with his cat and dogs".

The case was raised in the Dail today by Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath who argued that Ireland needs “common sense and joined up thinking.”

Sean told how the council said he "didn't show a social and economic need" to live in the area, despite being born and reared there.

He said: “We have to introduce a statutory instrument to allow log cabins and modular buildings so people can house themselves and help out in the housing crisis."

During the Famine, April 1847 a crowd of labourers called to Fr. Halley's house, Dungarvan appealing for work. He asked them not to resort to violence. The next day he arranged for 400 men to be employed picking stones at this beach at one shilling a day.

#Dungarvan & #Abbeyside population in 1659 was just 352. In 2022 it was up to 10,081. Interesting to many see family names still popular in the area and others no so common. The Hore a family once owned significant lands and estates in Dungarvan & Shandon up to the 17th century
