Interview with The East Palace Director Choi Jung Kyu (2026)

Q. The visuals in The East Palace are incredibly striking despite being a VFX heavy production. What was your approach to visual effects?

Choi Jung Kyu: I learned a great deal from cinematographer Park Jung Hoon and lighting director Kim Seung Gyu. Both started their careers working on historical dramas, and since I’ve also spent much of my career in the sageuk genre, we often discussed what kind of beauty could be expressed through a fantasy inspired by Korea’s past. I also met with cinematographer Jung Ilsung and had meaningful conversations with him.

In the end, we decided not to overdecorate or embellish things. Instead, we wanted to confront the power of the subjects and landscapes themselves. Rather than thinking, “We can fix this later with VFX,” we approached everything with the mindset of, “This should already feel like the final result, as if there were no VFX at all.”

It’s true that this project relies heavily on visual effects. However, our principle was to minimize our dependence on VFX whenever possible. We first built practical sets and real artistic elements, then used VFX to enhance and refine them.

The spirit world sets, including the corridor sequences, were built separately from the real world sets so that their colors and textures would feel distinct. Even the pillars and floors were intentionally constructed with slight tilts. Viewers may not consciously notice these details, but we hoped they would still sense that subtle feeling of strangeness and unease.

@American_Noona I watched it! It was cute even though Kim Yoo Jung could not pass off as a boy there. And Kwak Dong Yeon's bodyguard character had the best hair. I hear it has its own fanbase!

@American_Noona I admit I fast forwarded through some scenes and I rarely do that. Did not like the last minute crisis but I guess they had to tie up the governor storyline somehow. Sigh. But I love the characters!

@American_Noona I was torn between my frustration with Hari at being so in denial but also my disappointment in Jiui for not telling Hari about her grandma since he's supposed to care for her and be there for her. If I were Jiui, I wouldn't know what to do, thus I want to see what he does next.

@kscenedaily For me it was an older drama called "Queen for Seven Days" with Park Min Young and Yeon Woo Jin. They stuck close to real history with this one. It was good pain, but too heartbreaking to rewatch. 🥲

I love a well-written intelligent comedy movie.

As someone that normally cringes at comedy or people acting like headless chickens in movies, this one really struck gold for me
