Musashi said, “Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.” In prison we had another way of saying it: “The same thing that makes you laugh is the same thing that will make you cry.” Every pleasure contains within it the possibility of its opposite. If you eat because you’re bored, the pleasure eventually becomes weight gain. If you choose comfort over exertion, the pleasure of laziness becomes a weak body. If you chase attention, you become afraid of being ignored. If you chase praise, criticism begins to hurt. The farther we pull the pendulum toward pleasure, the more force we give its eventual swing toward pain.
Some of this can be avoided through discipline, but some can not. Everything we love is temporary. The person who brings us tremendous happiness will someday be gone. The body we enjoy will grow old. Everything we possess will eventually pass into someone else’s hands. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy life or love deeply. What it means is that we shouldn’t demand permanence from things that are temporary. Pleasure isn’t our enemy. Attachment is. The moment we say, “I need this to continue in order to be okay,” we have created the suffering that will come when it doesn’t.
Discipline is misunderstood. Some think it’s about forcing yourself to do things you hate. It’s not. Discipline is the repeated decision to act in alignment with the person you want to become, regardless of how you feel in the moment. Every time you keep your word to yourself, you are reshaping your character. Every repetition is another hammer strike on the blade. Transformation doesn’t arrive in a single moment or a single flash of inspiration. Where it arrives is through thousands of ordinary moments where you choose what is right over what is easy.
This is why every real spiritual tradition values disciplined practice. Whether it’s meditation, prayer, martial arts, or the work of alchemy, the practice itself isn’t the goal or the destination. It’s the vehicle, or the forge. It burns away distraction, self-deception, and the habits that keep you asleep. Eventually, discipline is no longer something you force yourself to do. It becomes your nature. And when your nature changes, your life will change as well.
We are where heaven and earth already meet. Human beings are the union of opposites. Our feet stand on the earth while our awareness reaches toward the infinite. The Great Work isn’t about escaping the body to find the divine. It’s about allowing the divine to become fully embodied THROUGH the body.
This is why physical training is so important. The body never lies. It doesn’t care what books you’ve read or what spiritual experiences you’ve had. It only reflects what you’ve practiced. Every repetition with the sword, every lift, every step, every breath is an opportunity to unite consciousness with matter. That’s the true marriage of heaven and earth….not somewhere beyond this world, but here, within our own flesh and bones.
You see a lot of weird things on line. One of them is people who constantly talk about barely being able to survive financially offering to perform “prosperity spells” for others. Or people who are perpetually single, complaining that they can’t find a partner, selling spells to help others find love. At some point, you have to kind of start to wonder….if the medicine works, why is the doctor still sick?
Magick is one of the few areas where people believe expertise requires absolutely no evidence of results. Failure can always be blamed on the planets, spirits, timing, subconscious blocks, or the will of the universe. But the laboratory doesn’t lie. If your practice never begins to manifest in your character, your relationships, your choices, and the actual conditions of your life, you may not be practicing magick at all. You may simply be using magick as an identity to avoid looking at your life. I’m not saying this to be harsh or judgmental, by the way. Just something to be aware of.
