@rowanfornow But they do work, and it’s mainly knowledge work. The pitch isn’t ”use this on your personal projects”, it’s to use it on whatever schlep your boss gives you. That’s what’s going to drive adoption.
Over 50% of Americans use AI and the adoption curve was over 2x faster than the internet.
The AI companies already have the user base, now they just need to convert them into paying customers.
How long did it take to go from 2% to 50% adoption in the USA:
- Cars: 15 years
- Internet: 7.5 years
- Computer: 19 years
- Smartphone: 6.5 years
- AI: just reached 2% today
If you are a technical person, consider working on robotics. It's such a unique combination of hard software and hardware problems that it's difficult to anything like it.
These machines will build our future.
@nicbstme It's called being an early adopter. Same thing as in every other technology, first people dismiss it for whatever reason they can because "muh change scary" and then slowly begin adopting it
People still claim to me that AI can't provide sources (ever heard about tool use bucko)
Ordered the Musk and Napoleon biographies for around 40€.
Two of the greatest people of the recent centuries, fully worth the investment to study their lives in more depth.
Overindexing on what looks good on a resume is a mistake. Its an indirect path to achieving the life you want, when you could be directly working on things that you want to work on.
This is why we have so many people working on meaningless SWE jobs instead pursuing things like robotics and space exploration.
Peter Thiel on how you should think about your future:
"What you end up doing when you think of the future as indefinite is you pick a job that you think will look good on your resume, because it will lead to a different job later on. There's even a credentialing version where you go to grad school, you get a consulting job, and you think of it as this branching tree diagram where you never really do something that you want to do.
You can think of the future on three horizons. Very short-term is: are you going to be happy, and will you be learning a lot? Medium-term is: how good is it on your resume? And very long-term is: are you working on something important or meaningful? We're in a skewed world where we overweight the medium-term and underweight some combination of the short-term and the long-term. I would recalibrate to focus on the short-term and the long-term, and forget about the medium-term."
@OrevaZSN Moravec's paradox:
the discovery that high-level abstract reasoning is easy for computers, while basic sensorimotor and perceptual skills are extremely difficult
@olivvrszn The best way you can protect the environment is with clean energy, space colonization and manufacturing. You can’t convince people to give up their lifestyles for the bees, and if you think they will you’re out of touch. Advancing technology is the only way.
@nhfoley The far more practical and likely thing is that people will continue to live on Earth but that the space colonization will also start to grow, eventually matching a significant fraction of Earth’s population
