Today in #Sikh History:
In 1930, during the independence struggle against the British, Jawaharlal Nehru, head of the Congress Party and future first Prime Minister of Independent India, stated, “…the brave Sikhs of the Punjab are entitled to special consideration. I see nothing wrong in an area and a set up in the north wherein the Sikhs can also experience the glow of freedom.”

This promise was reiterated in 1946 at a press conference held at an All India Congress Working Committee meeting in Calcutta, just a year before Independence.

Despite this assurance, and others like it given by prominent Congress leaders, Sikhs were betrayed after the British left the subcontinent and had to struggle and protest for basic linguistic and religious rights.
