I need like 98 people to take down their tweets that make fan fiction sound like ownership before it hits 100 and Anne Rice’s bones reanimate on all hallows Eve to end all our fun
fanfic that isn’t monetized falls under fair use but the second you try to claim any IP ownership you can get sued to hell and back by authors/publishers. don’t put your own ass on the line over a bruised ego.
I hope a lot of fic authors know that they can get in legitimate legal trouble if they try to claim copyright infringement on their works. ao3 is literally the wall between us and being sued by authors.
unlicensed people talking about transformative works lol. the only reason fanfiction has any right to exist is because it has no material benefit to the creator. the second you argue that you have legal protection, you lose your fair use defense and you're the infringer.
not sure why so many people are asking if i’m still alive? but here’s me coming home tonight. long ass shift and they wanted me to pick up an extra job in raccoon city for double but i just wasn’t feeling it
Thats the consequences of :
1) normies getting into fan activities and thinking everything has to cater to their needs
2) ppl who migrated from Wattpad, thinking the A of AO3 stands for attention seeker
3) ppl writing for kudos and not bc they genuinely like writing
I feel like some of yall are losing the plot… THE HISTORY OF FANFICTION IS PASSING STORIES BETWEEN FANS
THE STAR TREK FANDOM, FOUNDERS OF FANFICTION, WOULD TYPE FICS ON THEIR LITTLE TYPEWRITERS, PHOTOCOPY THEM, AND PASS THEM AROUND AT CONS
It’s barely been one day of ao3 down and some of yall are already starting ridiculous discourse. Ppl downloading + sharing fics when the site is down is such a lovely example of community and is functioning exactly as ao3 intended: preserving access to fics.
