Assistant professor of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins. Identity as an emergent property, machine learning, stem cells, high throughput biology. Opinions my own.
So excited to announce the appointment of @FertigLab Dr. Elana Fertig to be the new director of @UMmedschool Institute of Genome Sciences. https://t.co/vrKh7HL5Pn
My co-author @rlbarter and I are thrilled to announce the online release of our MIT Press book "Veridical Data Science: The Practice of Responsible Data Analysis and Decision Making" (https://t.co/u1euH9dcLC), an essential source for producing trustworthy data-driven results.
Check out the SpaceMarkers manuscript is published in @CellSystemsCP this morning! Thanks to our collaborators and @FertigLab, @ltkagohara, and @DrLizJaffee for being amazing mentors!
Principal Component Analysis in a gif.
The first principal component of a matrix is the first dimension of the orthogonal transformation that maximizes the variability of that first dimension. These transformations can be visualized as rotations of the points in the matrix rows.
As a parent of a now 3 year old I find this hilarious and accurate:
Hobaiter etal found that the vast majority of gestures used by toddlers younger than two years old...are the same as those of chimpanzees.https://t.co/ZijLNfrzFe Can Correctly Guess the Meaning of Chimp Gestures
Neuro twitter, please share! Both @HopkinsNeuro and @HopkinsKavli have summer research opportunities for undergrads, with applications due Feb 1. Students will be paired with a lab at Hopkins based on their interests, and it's fully funded! Apply here: https://t.co/jc86iGsha1
After a four-year pause, I am teaching Introduction to Data Science again and the free online textbook is being updated frequently. Good time to make requests. Changes already made:
-Added data.table chapter
-Caught up with dplyr 1.0.0
-Changed %>% to |>

With a combo of joy and exhaustion I can say that preprint day has come for https://t.co/700HRvQ7HL (https://t.co/cXloN0BDwV). Very briefly, PLAE is a powerful web app serving our curated meta atlas of ocular scRNA-seq transcriptomes. It now contains >1 million cells across
Excited to announce the complete line up of session chairs with @marinkazitnik as co-chair for ML! Abstracts for talks due Friday and for posters in 3 weeks. I cant wait to hear about all your latest work! #biodata22#methodsmatter https://t.co/3bnjbfPxqv
When Elana Fertig, Dana Pe’er and myself all have the same experience with our applied computational biology research funding from NIH, maybe something needs changing.
I am so proud of @KiaraCEldred1! As a grad student in the Johnston lab, she was a true pioneer who established retinal organoids in our "fly" lab and made awesome discoveries about human cone cells. This is just the beginning for a fantastic scientist!
Congrats to the Fellows!
My angry plant breeding student plea to future authors of “Yield increase by [insert wild number] in X crop” studies:
Please verify your yield estimates in multi-environment trials in elite backgrounds. Yield in lab-optimized, unimproved lines means very little 14/
