@HorizonHawksSB@tangotiger It was only a “cursory attempt” because Clement had already started to move off his original path, and to tag him meant chasing him to the OF and losing any chance of an out at first. Frankly, I think it’s a loophole that happened to be exploited.
@JaysClubhouse@MountRutschman@JomboyMedia I almost think this situation shows exposes a loophole in the rule. Clement starts to run outside his path before the 2B even gets the ball. He’s definitely further than 3 feet off line, and there’s hardly a tag attempt because Clement is already so far outside his original path.

@MrLauterbach_PE@BradGalli I imagine any fielder in that situation has the mindset of leaving no doubt and making sure they don’t screw it up for the pitcher. Miggy probably knew he could field it more than he was sure the 2B could.
@dpgiglio@Super70sSports That play-by-play guy has joked with me about the “dumb announcer saying there was no chance” to throw him out. Said it was the greatest single athletic feat he witnessed.
If AJ Hinch explains postgame that Montero came out after 6 due to “the third time through lineup,” one must quickly remind him the ChiSox needed just five batters against a different pitcher to take the lead.
