⚓ On This Day: Sixteen years ago, the Government of Canada announced the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (later renamed the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS)) — a long-term vision designed to revitalize Canadian shipbuilding, strengthen the marine industry, and deliver much-needed vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard.
The strategy marked a significant shift toward the industry here at home, creating a more predictable procurement process and helping reduce the traditional boom-and-bust cycle faced by Canadian shipyards and suppliers.
By establishing long-term partnerships, encouraging regional collaboration, and creating opportunities for businesses across the marine sector, the NSS laid important groundwork for the industry we know today. For Canada’s shipbuilding community, this announcement represented more than procurement; it was a commitment to Canadian expertise, innovation, and skilled jobs.
Today, we recognize this milestone and reflect on the progress made since this pivotal moment in Canada’s shipbuilding story.

From the first wireless transatlantic signal at Signal Hill to today’s digital infrastructure, resilient communication systems have always shaped how we stay connected. 🌎📡
On World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, we’re reflecting on Newfoundland and Labrador’s role in the history of communication and the importance of building digital lifelines that are resilient by design.
📅 In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless communication at Signal Hill in St. John’s; a breakthrough that transformed global connectivity and proved long-distance wireless communication was possible. More than a century later, the systems we rely on every day continue to keep communities, industries, and economies connected when it matters most.
At Genoa, we understand the importance of strong, reliable systems and the role innovation plays in supporting resilient operations across complex industries.
Today, we celebrate the innovators, infrastructure, and technologies that continue to strengthen global connectivity and keep the world moving forward.

We’re on the ground in Vancouver this week, joining industry, government, and innovation leaders to explore the future of Canada’s defence and maritime sectors at the @AbcmiNews & @CanadaCOAST1 Defence & Security Innovation Forum; and the conversations today did not disappoint.
A few key themes we’re taking away:
⚓ Sustaining legacy fleets is a critical challenge: with aging assets, there’s a growing need for innovation in areas like material sustainment, corrosion management, and lifecycle support.
⚓ Innovation ≠ buzzword: it’s about solving real operational problems, from maintenance to integration and usability in complex environments.
⚓ Canada’s defence strategy is evolving: with increased investment, a push for sovereign capabilities, and stronger collaboration with SMEs and industry partners.
⚓ Bridging the gap from idea to implementation: advancing along the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) spectrum requires not just great tech, but a deep understanding of real-world use, operators, and systems integration.
One message came through loud and clear: collaboration across industry, academia, and government is essential to deliver meaningful, deployable capability.
We’re looking forward to what's in store for day 2!
