SSECONDLY, across club + international, Messi has reached 52 career finals, winning 39 of them (75%), compared to Ronaldo's 41 finals and 26 victories (63%).

Individually, Messi has produced 35 goals and 17 assists in those finals (52 goal contributions in 52 appearances). Ronaldo has recorded 25 goals and 2 assists in 41 finals (27 goal contributions).

Messi is by far the better goal scorer and most elite scorer of all time. I could rattle off a dozen other metrics (goals in calendar year, golden shoes, pichichi’s, free kicks, non penalty goals, etc).

Let Ronaldo fans have headers and penalty goals. To your point, those are meaningless.

If Ballon d’Or voters are genuinely giving greater weight to performances in the biggest matches, then yes. It should go in this order.

MESSI
44 goals, 30 assists, MLS Cup. 8 goals + 4 assists while carrying Argentina to the World Cup final. When Argentina faced elimination, he produced goals, assists, and playmaking to orchestrate comeback wins. He does play in MLS and Argentina lost the final. 73 goal season, 3 trophies with Bayern and 6 World Cup goals. Strongest full season statistical resume. Did not win UCL or make it to World Cup final.
