Firstly this is not Ed Miliband’s shutdown. Labour won an enormous mandate from the public for a manifesto that included no new drilling in the North Sea. Secondly, no new drilling is not a shutdown.Thirdly the industry are trying to BS us. Why would they shutdown operations that are profitable, years early and incur their share of shutdown costs - a whopping £33bn. Of course they won’t. And fourth, this story exposes the obscene level of subsidies enjoyed by the fossil fuel industry - we’re going to pay them £11bn to one day clean up their operations. Meanwhile they enjoy subsidies of nearly £20bn every year. The right wing press seem blind to this in their rush to condemn support for green energy.

At Save Windermere, we don’t often wade into the national debate on sewage pollution. Our mission is clear: to end sewage pollution in Windermere.

But when Environment Secretary Steve Reed visited recently and declared that the government shares our ambition of a sewage-free Windermere, we began watching closely and asking tough questions to ensure those words weren’t just more rhetoric and that this government is genuinely committed to cleaning up our lakes, rivers and seas.

DEFRA keeps repeating a headline-grabbing claim: that £100 billion of private investment has been secured to fix the sewage crisis. But today in The Express, covered by Steph Spyro, we’ve exposed how the government has misled the public about where this investment is really coming from.

And it’s no surprise to us that it's you, the customer, who is paying for this. Not the predatory shareholders who continue to pillage and damage England’s largest lake.

Privatisation has failed. The government needs to accept this and stop protecting a sinking industry. We want action and not rhetoric. In Windermere it's very simple: bring in legislation that makes it illegal for water companies to discharge any sewage into Windermere.
