Distressing reports are emerging from across the country about the deaths of BLOs tasked with carrying out the Special Intensive Revision in an unreasonably short timeframe. The Election Commission’s haste in proceeding with this exercise at the behest of the ruling BJP — which has become all the more evident with UP Govt's FIRs against BLOs — despite a pending petition before the Supreme Court, not only risks mass voter disenfranchisement but is now endangering precious lives too.

The ECI must immediately halt this criminal SIR exercise, take full responsibility for the lives lost, and ensure compensation for the bereaved families. Nothing less is acceptable. @ECISVEEP

Today marks the birth centenary of revolutionary film genius Ritwik Ghatak. Few works in the history of cinema have portrayed the pain and suffering of women as powerfully as Meghe Dakha Tara. Ghatak was a member of the undivided Communist Party; and his note on the tasks of the Communist Party on the Cultural Front is very relevant today, and will be for decades to come. Every work of his deserves to be seen and felt many times over; more so, the classic Ajantrik.

Ghatak’s Amar Lenin, a short documentary commissioned by the West Bengal Government to mark Lenin’s birth centenary in 1970, was initially banned by the National Film Censorship Board. It is unfortunate that earlier this year, a planned screening at a Kolkata school of the same film, this time to commemorate Ghatak’s own birth centenary, had to be cancelled because of undemocratic pressure by TMC workers. Decades after his passing, Ghatak’s work still ruffles feathers, even as it continues to both unsettle, and inspire — a testament to the enduring power of his images and ideas.

@jagograhakjago, seems like a new scam. They take money in advance and delay the service as much as they can to push the customer to cancel the service. Then they will take their sweet time to refund my money which they hoarded for no reason.

Why is this even allowed?
