Start of the Anglo-Boer War (11 October 1899)

"The British calculated on a Boer collapse after the first battles. According to a British Military Intelligence forecast, after one serious defeat, the Boers would be too deficient in discipline and organisation to make any further real stand."

The British had budgeted that the war would last about 3 months. It ended up lasting almost 3 years, despite the British capturing the capitals of both Boer republics, and costing between 200 - 250 million pounds.

The Free State Boer Republic (OFS) throwing its weight behind the Zuid Afrikaanse Republic (ZAR) surprised many British politicians as well.

Just before the war broke out, President of the OFS, M.T. Steyn, told his Volksraad that he would "rather lose the independence of the Free State with honour than do so in dishonour or disloyalty."

For Britain, the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) ended up being their longest, most expensive, and bloodiest conflict between 1815 and 1914.
