I always dreamed of going to university when I arrived in Australia but it was not easy, I faced indefinite detentions and I still suffer from them, all my dreams are dissipated, I have one wish to live a moment of freedom one day, even if it is only for one day.

“Australian infectious disease experts have pointed to detention centres as potential “potholes" in the government’s new road to recovery from COVID-19.”
Thanks so much for these words. I hope the shift towards kindness and empathy - and respecting our own and others’ suffering - is a lasting outcome of this virus.
I wrote about that here too. I’d love you to read it @NyadolNyuon if you have time. https://t.co/5SgQZ7ODkb
These men are terrified by the threat of COVID-19. They just want what all of us want right now - to be safe. Instead, they are forced to sleep 3 or 4 to a room in cramped detention centres and hotels.
The Government must release these people to community housing now
@rightsagenda Why do detention guidelines say staff can come & go & only need to 'self-screen for symptoms?' Govt admits ppl in detention facilities are among those most at risk & we know ppl can be asymptomatic & transmit disease. They're hiding behind these guidelines https://t.co/o4UXwNWLrk
Mostafa Azimitabar on the risk of COVID-19 in immigration detention, “If just one of us gets this virus, all of us [will] get it quickly...They have placed us at an extremely high risk..."
The Government must urgently release people to safety.

Motu Koita Assembly, the body representing traditional owners of Port Moresby, is installing permanent gates at the entry points of several villages following a case of covid19 being identified in the city. #PNG
OK, so if 80% of #COVID19au cases are mild or asymptomatic, HOW can it be safe to send staff into detention centres & prisons with only "self-screening for symptoms" & instructions not to work "if symptomatic"? Isn't this lunacy?

Doesn't the reliance on 'self-screening' among detention centre staff also put an unfair burden on them to know if they're carrying COVID-19? Imagine being the worker who brought the virus in if it costs lives!

@NickMcKim@TomCBallard Thanks for your work on this @NickMcKim & @TomCBallard! Nick can you check out the CDNA national guidelines 4 covid outbreaks in detention? Why do they rely ONLY on self screening for symptoms by staff?

The worker who infected several staff & residents at a Sydney nursing home only had mild #COVID19au symptoms & is "distraught & mortified." She just had a "scratchy throat." How can we guarantee safety in detention if staff only have to 'self-screen for symptoms?'
