This summer I had my mind blown at the free You and Me festival of experimental music in Beijing, and today my feature article about the fest appears in this month's issue of @thewiremagazine Respect & thanks to Zhao Ziyi, @neciakiad Yan Jun, Mattin & the other artists involved!
I met Dolly Parton when Berlin played on an NBC TV show she also appeared on called “Live and In Person” in September 1983. She came into our green room before the taping and I’ll say completely honestly (because she always enjoyed a laugh about this more than anyone), the first shock to me was her “top half.” She’s tiny like me and as she walked toward me, I almost couldn’t see her behind those babies. WHOA!!!! Then EVEN MORE WHOA, her immediate warmth to me and my band, reaching out her hand, saying she loved our music and leaving with “I’ll see you on the charts!” She didn’t have to do any of that. She was a mega-star. Even MORE brilliant was this loving, kind-hearted person you never forget.
And what a songwriter! WOW!
Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to die, ever. They give so much just by their presence that we need. I guess Dolly needed some rest after all those gifts she left us with. Thank you so much, Goddess. You rest in peace now 💚
