The abandoned Man Eaters Lodge located Nairobi–Mombasa Highway near Tsavo, close to the site where the famous Tsavo man eating lions attacked railway workers in 1898.

Built in the 1970s it catered to tourists, safari visitors, bus passengers, and motorists traveling between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Why the Man Eaters Motel failed:

• Remote location made it difficult to attract consistent business.
• Improved Nairobi–Mombasa highway reduced the need for overnight stopovers.
• Tourists preferred staying inside Tsavo National Park lodges for better wildlife experiences.
• High operating and maintenance costs in a remote area hurt profitability.
• Changing travel habits (faster buses and domestic flights) reduced customer numbers.
• Gradual decline in occupancy led to closure and eventual abandonment.
• It never fully capitalized on the world-famous Tsavo lion story by developing into a major heritage tourism attraction.
