“What you’re seeing is a race based pogrom, we are seeing men going door to door asking to 'get the foreigners out' based exclusively on the colour of their skin.”
SDLP leader Claire Hannah criticises the unrest taking place in Belfast.
#Newsnight
The blocking of roads tonight, accompanied with community destruction serves no one but those seeking to destroy community relations. We must now double our efforts to rebuild relations with those impacted communities, fight racism & condemn all levels of violence.
I’ve spent this morning at Kinnaird Terrace and spoke to residents & witnesses of last night’s attack who are in complete shock.
My thoughts are with the victim, his family and the people in the area where this attack took place – just meters from Girdwood and my old school. The idea that an attack like this could take place in our area is horrifying.
The bravery of those who intervened to stop the attack and the police who arrested the assailant are to be commended.
I have contacted Radius Housing, the PSNI, Belfast Trust & Belfast City Council this morning to ensure that residents living both in the building were the attack took place and on the street are given all support they require.
Some people: lol at unionists shooting themselves in the foot by constantly lundying each other
Same people: SDLP are stoop west Brit scum because they dont use precisely the same words as SF when talking about Irish unity
Makes complete sense.
I only encountered Desmond Rea in his latter years - including at events very recently - and he was always both civil and insightful.
His role in helping to oversee a new start for policing in stands by itself a major contribution to public service and the whole community.
Fair play to @ClaireHanna in not letting Jim Allister get away with another ridiculous bile-laced contribution on @bbctheview
It really is all he has to offer.
Yesterday we brought a motion to the Assembly endorsing a new Ireland back in Europe over a future led by Farage.
It was defeated by just one vote, with 16 MLAs abstaining.
Change is not inevitable and will take time and care, but we are clear about the future we want to build.
From Holywood and on to Crossmaglen, another great @SDLPlive Town Hall, chaired by our dynamic local Councillor @peterbyrnejnr.
Really enjoying hearing from people about how they are hearing politics, and their hopes for the future.
Next stop Cushendall.
Was away at end of last week so only now looking at the Supreme Court legacy ruling with my Brexit head on. It’s a really significant judgement in limiting the reach of Article 2 of the Windsor Framework, the human rights bit of NI’s Brexit deal.
Floral Hall is something I’ll happily talk to anyone about!
And I did this week with the @irish_news - link below this internal photo I took last year ⬇️⬇️
The UK is changing. Here, we have a need & responsibility to make things work in the here and now, and to prepare for a different constitutional future.
The SDLP is working for a functioning, anti sectarian, centre left Northern Ireland , on the path to a reconciled new Ireland
A bracing and uplifting start early this morning at Hannahstown Hill, walking with hundreds of others from Darkness into Light for the annual suicide prevention event.
Last year I called for review & renewal of policing. I was attacked, with completed unfounded spin, by someone who now professes blindness to any sexism in the PSNI.
Those of us who genuinely believe in & support PSNI must review with honesty & support real organisational change
A very impressive turnout for any political party event, never mind an SDLP organised gathering in Holywood, N Down. Beyond the noise at political leadership level, people are genuinely interested & engaged with the potential of a new Ireland.
Well done to the organisers. 👏🏻👏🏻
Nigel Farage talks of a "truly historic shift in British politics".
People in Northern Ireland have a right to decide whether they want a Farage future against their will.
The only way of decisively rejecting that future is to choose a new Ireland, back in Europe.
Standing room only tonight in Holywood!
Thanks to @ClaireHanna for spending the evening with us talking all things - from planning, stray cats, to a New Ireland 😅 There is a better way! @SDLPlive
Today the SDLP Opposition moved amendments to improve scrutiny in Stormont.
While other parties supported, SF & DUP teamed up again to thwart new rules to make them show the economic impacts of their cuts, measure the cost of division & show progress on their own commitments.
Staggering images & all the more so because on today’s @StephenNolan show we discussed the @ChiefConPSNI’s pledge deal with illegal scrambler use more robustly! 🤦♂️
