A recent study showed that patients with a highly lethal cancer had their tumors shrink, with a 100% disease control rate when given a simple mineral.
Advanced non-small cell lung cancer is a brutal condition.
Only ~10% of people with it survive past 5 years.
This study sought to uncover the role of selenium in this cancer, and wanted to see if using it as a therapy could help.
Selenium levels are low in people with this cancer, and low selenium drives cancer in animals.
They showed that:
➤ Various immune cells were lower in cancer
➤ Selenium in serum was about 1/3 in cancer compared to health
➤ Animals on low selenium diets got cancer at nearly double the rate
➤ Animals with low selenium DIED of cancer at much higher rates
➤ Giving them more selenium in the diet restored their serum levels + immune cells back to healthy levels
So, clearly selenium is playing a central role here.
Next, they gave animals selenium in nanoparticles, and saw improvements in cancer.
➤ Animals on low selenium diets had larger tumors
➤ Selenium nanoparticles (III) actually outperformed chemo (II)
➤ Giving selenium back to deficient animals restored immune cell composition back to health
Nanoparticles are thought to have better absorption / penetration into cells.
But they didn't compare these nanoparticles to standard selenium.
Once again here we see that administering selenium nanoparticles (III) improved immune profile.
They had greater production of inflammatory cytokines, and their natural killer cells produced more toxic factors.
In cancer, this is huge, because the immune system being suppressed is one of the main reasons why cancer is able to take hold and spread.
This seems to mainly be due to selenium's role in increasing glutathione peroxidase in these immune cells - an enzyme that controls immune cell activity / proliferation.
They also showed that selenium nanoparticles had a direct cancer cell killing effect in lung cancer.
Selenium nanoparticles upregulated an enzyme called ASK1, which downstream increased reactive oxygen species output, which helps kill cancer cells.
Then, when people were given selenium at 200 micrograms per day, the effect was drastic.
5/6 people had their tumors SHRINK, while all 6 patients did not worsen.
Meanwhile without selenium, only 3 patients saw no progression of cancer, while not a single patient had smaller tumors.
Yes, it's small, and it's not placebo controlled.
But, you can't ignore this. I challenge you to find me an instance where placebo resulted in measurable decreases in tumor sizes in humans. It doesn't happen.
