This video travels a #RusticRoad" from #Tigerton to #Wittenberg WI. A correction: Tigerton did not get its name from roaring water, but it most likely was originally named "Tiergarten", which meant a wild place in the 1800s, but now means "zoo" in German.

A #BearTrack on the bank of the Red River near Gresham Wisconsin. Although rare 30 years ago, black bears are becoming more common in the #ShawanoCounty area.

These watchful #BarredOwls were seen on June 6, 2021 near the Red River in #ShawanoCounty - bordering the #StockbridgeMunsee Mohican Nation. The birds appear to be juveniles that are still donning their fuzz. This special area is rich with diverse wildlife.

Extra testing for #CWD in #whitetail deer is being pursued by a special hunt mostly in Germania township, #Shawano Co., WI. The infected deer triggering this action was taken next to a @WWhitetails deer farm that has had many infections - which is now in the wild. @WDNR postcard:

@WDNR Hopefully this program helps put deer populations back in balance. Some areas of #ShawanoCounty are severely overpopulated (by 10x or more) with #whitetail deer, which blocks any tree regeneration and devastates forest ecology. @EricManges

The @WDNR confirms a wild deer tested positive for CWD in southwestern Shawano County, within 10 miles of Waupaca County. As required by state law, the DNR will renew the baiting and feeding bans in Shawano and Waupaca counties.

@WDNR Reviewing bans does nothing to address this #CWD outbreak. Two @WDNR steps would help. 1: Shut down the adjacent commercial deer operation with >50 CWD cases to cut the source of infection. 2: Reduce the area deer population to match the natural carrying capacity, slowing spread.

As some #farmland in #CentralWisconsin naturally returns to #forest, old #farm implements left on the edges of fields become relics. Here is a 1930s era Avery #threshing machine now #abandoned and tree-locked on what was once a farm road. Its value today is the history it tells.

#CWD positive deer was taken during the 2020 hunting season adjacent to a #WildernessWhitetails deer pen in Germania Township, #ShawanoCounty. Pen had over 50 confirmed CWD cases in recent years, and now the #prion is in the wild. Single fence allowed deer to nuzzle. @WWhitetails

Log trains once fit through this dense cedar swamp in #ShawanoCounty. The Big Falls Railway tore out the rails about 100 years ago and slow growing #WhiteCedar and #Spruce trees then began to fill in the gap. Wet #snow in this panoramic shot makes it look completely impassable.

These #aspen seedlings in a #goldenrod clearing near #Gresham, WI could not grow fast enough to escape browsing by #Whitetail deer. #ShawanoCounty in #CentralWisconsin has a serious deer overpopulation problem that is completely preventing natural forest regeneration.

Wisconsin forests are under assault by #InvasiveSpecies such as this glossy #buckthorn bush. It is easy to identify, but hard to kill. A bow saw and #RoundUp spray to the stump should work well, just as it does with invasive Amur #honeysuckle.
