This week I came across Johann Christophs Adelung's dictionary "Grammatisch-kritisches Wörterbuch der Hochdeutschen Mundart" from 1774. What struck me is that Adelung calls High German (= Standard German) a "Mundart", another word for "dialect". Here is why... #LinguisticSunday
