USC was brought in as a "temporary" crisis charge in 2011. Fifteen years later, it's still hammering low and middle income workers from the first euro over the threshold, and unlike other taxes, credits can't soften it.

I put it to the Dáil today: if fiscal discipline is the watchword for Budget 2027, it has to apply to workers too, not just spending lines.

I'm calling for a costed roadmap for the phased abolition of USC, starting with the lowest earners, and for the Exchequer yield and distributional analysis to be published so the Dáil can actually scrutinise this before the budget is decided behind closed doors.

Enough with "temporary" measures that outlive the crisis they were built for. Cork North Central workers deserve better.
