As Ukrainians look to Washington for decisions that could shape the course of the war, Robert Brovdi, the Ukrainian drone commander widely known as Magyar, has delivered a reminder about the importance of self-reliance.

His message is not about abandoning international partnerships. It is about recognising that Ukraine cannot afford to place its future entirely in the hands of foreign governments, whose priorities and decisions may change.

Brovdi's words reflect a lesson Ukraine has repeatedly confronted throughout the war: outside assistance matters enormously, but the responsibility for defending the country ultimately rests with Ukrainians themselves.

Diplomatic promises can offer hope. Military assistance can change battlefield conditions. Yet neither removes the uncertainty surrounding decisions made thousands of kilometres away.

For Brovdi, preserving Ukraine's independence requires something more dependable than expectations of a breakthrough in Washington: the determination, cooperation and resilience of Ukrainians fighting for their own country.

His message is simple. Hope for support from allies, but never mistake hope for a guarantee.

My friend Leo traveled to Tokyo carrying his late grandfather’s 1970s Seiko watch.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is running out of patience with Donald Trump, accusing the US president of abandoning Ukraine while moving closer to Vladimir Putin.

“I made a mistake by believing Donald Trump’s promises. He assured the world that he would help Ukraine and bring this war to an end if he returned to the White House. Yet, more than a year into his presidency, Ukraine is still fighting for its survival.

Instead of standing firmly with a country defending itself against invasion, Trump has taken positions that raise serious questions about America’s commitment to Ukraine. His approach has left many Ukrainians wondering whether the promises made to us were ever going to be fulfilled.

But let me make one thing clear: Ukraine is a sovereign nation, not a property of the United States. Donald Trump cannot simply decide who governs our country or dictate our future.

Behind this war are millions of Ukrainians who have lost loved ones, children who have grown up under the sound of explosions, families forced to flee their homes, and soldiers who have sacrificed everything to defend our homeland.

Their suffering cannot be erased by a political agreement, and their sacrifices cannot be traded away for somebody else’s interests.
