Amir Raisian, a defense attorney, told Shargh that Branch 39 of Iran’s Supreme Court, which had previously overturned the death sentence of labor activist #SharifehMohammadi, has now upheld it, despite the fact that all the original flaws and ambiguities in the case remain unresolved.

Mohammadi had initially been sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Rasht Revolutionary Court. The Supreme Court later annulled the ruling, citing numerous issues, including the lack of evidence linking her to any armed operations, the failure to prove membership in armed groups, and serious flaws in the intelligence service’s report. The case was then sent to a parallel branch for retrial.

Nevertheless, Branch 2 of the Rasht Revolutionary Court once again issued a death sentence, relying solely on the same disputed intelligence report and without addressing the earlier objections. After the ruling, Mohammadi’s lawyers filed another request for retrial, which was referred back to Branch 39 of the Supreme Court. According to Raisian, the court’s most recent decision merely reaffirmed the previous flawed verdict: “We expected the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling again, but unfortunately, it did not.”

Raisian stressed that legal efforts will continue: “We still hope for a retrial and will pursue all possible legal avenues to stop the execution.” He expressed optimism that given the serious problems with the case, Mohammadi’s death sentence will ultimately be overturned.
