This is partially correct. Relegation does drive competitiveness, but in a segmented way. Teams at the bottom compete against teams at the bottom. The unequal distribution of income in European leagues means that only 2 or 3 teams are realistic title contenders every season.
Poch isn't wrong. tbh And it's not just a soccer thing either.
Just look at the teams who regularly pick in the top 5 in the NFL, or in MLB or the NBA. Rev shares guarantee profitability. Team valuations only ever go up.
Players and coaches fight hard because they want to keep their job, but some owners aren't really incentivized to invest because they make money no matter what.
Overseas, the threat of relegation ensures competitiveness because there is room for the people with the checkbook to actually be embarassed.

Numbers on Christian Watson’s four-year contract extension:
It’s actually a $92.5 million extension. There are escalators that could bring it closer to the $110.5 million that was initially reported.
His APY of $23.135 in new $ puts him just inside the top 20 among WRs.
NEWS: Big Ten officials are expected to discuss in the upcoming days a league-wide mandate to not play Texas Tech in any sports, per three Big Ten sources. This is in the wake of Nebraska AD Troy Dannen informing his staff today that they aren't allowed to schedule Texas Tech.
I guess nobody around Brendan Sorsby told him to acknowledge his mistakes and face the consequences.
Playing the victim in a case like that reveals a weak character.
