Lately I've been losing sleep thinking about how disinformation has grown more powerful than ever before, and how traditional media are continuously weaker when it comes to targeting it. I was thrilled that I was able to share some of my anxieties today in an excellent event organized by the @EU_EESC discussing whether citizens can help us fight against the growing beast of disinformation.

Disclaimer: I'm not at all hopeful. Tech and social media platforms are becoming more hostile to the truth. Disinformation is weaponized in ways more targeted and sophisticated than ever before. Malicious actors know how to manipulate emotions and grievances and win the hearts and minds of the people. Erosion of trust is peaking. But there are glimmers of hope and potential solutions: from reframing the way we fact-check (less hostile and elitist, more inclusive), to building partnerships with citizen curated media and the forgotten local press, to democratizing social media analytics platforms to detect threats in real time across all newsrooms, and to fully redefining media literacy in Europe.
