I asked Swami Harshanand “Guruji, who invented zero and infinity?”
He replied “One day Aryabhatta counted the men who weren’t afraid of their wives. That’s how he discovered zero.”
“And infinity?”
“Ramanujam counted the men who were afraid of their wives. That’s how he discovered infinity.” 😀
Not cool.
You can dislike a Prime Minister, disagree with a government, protest, debate and vote differently. That’s democracy.
But reducing the office of India’s Prime Minister, the man, the office, and what he represents abroad, to a joke on foreign soil -doesn’t feel like the right thing or dissent - to me.
It diminishes him, the institution, and ultimately, us.
Took this photo while on the way from Somnath to Vadodara…
On the shores of Prabhas Patan, the Somnath Temple stands tall as a radiant symbol of devotion, history and civilisational spirit. It has outlasted barbaric attacks, invasions and the passage of centuries. It is eternal. Somnath gives every Indian strength, courage and hope.
Har Har Mahadev!
Throw back pic from my first film, Masoom.
On the first day of release, I went to the main theatre … and there were only two people in the whole cinema hall.. and one of them was me !
Those days ‘black marketing’ of cinema tickets was really prelavent .. young men, or even gangs, would bulk by cinema tickets and then sell them at higher prices on the day of the show.. of course if the hall was full ..
Except the first show on the first day for Masoom, the hall was completely empty !
Outside I got surrounded by some pretty angry looking young boys when they discovered I was the director .. they had lost their money that day ..
I must have looked pretty crestfallen. So one of them actually took pity on me, and said ..
‘Sir .. the problem is you’ve made an ‘article’ film’ .. if you want a career , don’t do that ‘
Article film ?? I kept wondering .. article film .. I realized he meant an ‘artistic film’ .. Don’t ever make an artistic film this young black marketeer was trying to warn me ..
Well, the Friday of release .. all the cinema halls were empty .. as they were on Saturday, Sunday , Monday , Tuesday ..
The Distributors of the film gave up trying to support the film. It was too expensive to keep the film showing to empty halls ..
I remember the feeling that day .. when they told me they had decided to give up trying to hold the theatres .. I walked the streets of Mumbai and thought about what I was going to do next in my life , for making films was certainly no longer an option.
Something strange happened on Thursday. A friend called me and asked if I could help him get tickets to Masoom. I told him that was a bad joke. But then ..
On Thursday one cinema hall had filled up .. then on Friday there were lines of people waiting to buy tickets .. and over the weekend the distributors were scrambling to get back the halls they had given up, and my ‘Article’ film was declared a hit ..
What happened that weekend ? People say in retrospect it was ‘Word of mouth’ .. but how could it be, when hardly anyone saw the film ?
What happened that Thursday ? .. I still wonder as am about to go into making ‘Masoom, the next generation’ .. years after Masoom the original became a cult film ..
Is ‘Masoom, the next generation’ another ‘Article film’ ?

I appreciate @chetan_bhagat for opening up a necessary conversation around wheelchair usage at airports, even if the reality is more layered than it appears.
I’m not sure it’s fair to call this “abuse” without context.
In my travels, I’ve consistently noticed that flights originating from Europe have only a handful of wheelchairs, while flights from India, especially to the US, have long, seemingly endless queues. At first, it puzzled me too.
A pilot friend once explained something that becomes obvious when you see the full picture. A large share of Indian international travellers are elderly parents visiting children abroad. Many have knee issues, low muscle strength, limited exposure to long walks, and little familiarity with massive, signage-driven airports that assume confidence, speed, and digital literacy.
Add another cultural reality: Indians panic easily in unfamiliar systems, especially when there is no human mediation. So children often pre-emptively book wheelchairs not to “cheat” the system, but to ensure gate-to-gate human assistance in an intimidating environment.
Is the system being optimised? Yes.
Is it always fraudulent? No.
In many cases, it’s a practical workaround for ageing bodies, anxious minds, and airports designed for the young, fit, and fluent. Sometimes what looks like gaming the system is simply families choosing certainty over chaos.
The solution isn’t shaming travellers. It’s better design: assisted-walk options, human help points, electric carts, senior-friendly lanes, and support without defaulting to wheelchairs.
And this is a transitional problem. As today’s Gen X, more travelled, more airport-literate, and more physically active, grows older, this dependence will naturally decline.
Some problems don’t need outrage. They need empathy, design, and time.
Azharuddin was loved by Indians and was made captain, but moment he got caught in match-fixing:
“I’m targeted for my religion.”
Hamid Ansari stayed at top posts, later became VP. Nobody objected. Moment his tenure completed:
“Musalman dara hua hai.”
Sanjay Dutt, a top actor, loved by the masses. The moment he got arrested in the 1992 Mumbai blast–related cases:
“I’m targeted because my mother was a Muslim.”
Aryan Khan, a superstar’s son. Living a private life, loved by superstar fans. The moment he got arrested in drug-related cases:
“He is targeted for being a Muslim.”
AR Rahman, one of the most loved composers in India. The moment his work dried up because his kind of music faded and he didn’t put in enough effort to catch up:
“I think I get less work for communal reasons.”
All the achievements are only theirs; failures aren’t. Failures are of the people who “target them for their religion". Bro, you were of the same religion when people were loving, celebrating, and supporting you. If religion were an issue, you wouldn’t have got the fame, money, and idolatry, but you never acknowledge that. When everything is going right, religion is invisible. It appears only when accountability begins.

Carved downwards out of a single piece of rock , with no tools other than hammers and chisels ..
Yet the detail of carvings and sculptures within the temple are not just exquisite , but absolutely precise and accurate in form and in geometry.. from top to bottom.
What happened if someone chiselled a nose on one of the sculptures wrong ? Did the whole temple need to be carved all over again ? No.. they just didn’t get anything wrong ? How ..
.. that’s a mystery greater than the mystery of the Pyramids of Giza…
The system of mathematics in ancient India came down from our scriptures and formed the basis of a lot of our music ( Taal ) , art and architecture, .. our Philosophy was not linear .. but circular .. where the finite met the infinite again and again in concentric circles .. like how the Universe is ..
The closest modern science now comes to it is what we call Quantum computing , Quantum entanglement . The theories on which Google has built the ‘Willow’ .. the words fastest Quantum Computer.
The British changed our education system and made it linear. The colonizers did not have any understanding or knowledge of Quantum .. we did .. but over time of colonisation.. we lost the knowledge and Wisdom ..
.. yes, Wisdom too .. for knowledge without Wisdom is dry , with the true and wider meaning squeezed out of it .
No wonder that when the greatest Indian Mathematician of all time was asked how he solved some of the most perplexing questions that all the greatest physicists and mathematicians in world were unable to solve ..
Ramanujan replied ..
..’My Devi comes to me.. ‘

The Somnath Temple we see today wouldn’t have been a reality had it not been for the great Sardar Patel. A visit during Diwali time in 1947 moved him to the extent that he vowed to rebuild a grand temple there. When the Temple opened its doors in May 1951, Sardar Sahib wasn’t there, but his indomitable will and vision are reflected in this divine Temple complex.

Prime Minister @narendramodi takes part in Shaurya Yatra on way to the Somnath Temple in Gujarat surrounded by 108 Horses. Historic celebrations in India as part of #SomnathSwabhimaanParv.
Why did God Shiva choose to stay at Somnath? Because it was here that He restored the Moon’s lost light. 🌙 After Daksha’s curse, Chandra lost his radiance and wandered in darkness. Then he reached Prabhas, where the sea meets the sky and prayed to Shiva with all his heart. That one moment changed everything.
